Chapter 1

5 AM! MY MIL DEMANDED BREAKFAST! I REFUSED TO GET UP. SHE SAID, "TEACH HER WHERE HER PLACE IS." MY HUSBAND THREW ME OUT OF BED, IGNORING MY FALL AND THE BRUISES. THEY THINK SERVING HIS MOTHER IS MY DUTY. RIGHT THEN...
At 5:03 a.m., my mother-in-law pounded on our bedroom door and shouted, “Breakfast. Now.” Three minutes later, my husband threw me out of bed so hard my shoulder struck the nightstand—and neither of them even looked down.
I lay on the carpet, stunned, one hand pressed against the bruise already darkening beneath my sleeve.
Daniel stood above me in gray sweatpants, jaw tight with irritation, not guilt.
“My mother asked you for one simple thing.”
“One simple thing?” I whispered. “She woke me at five in the morning to cook for six relatives who arrived uninvited.”
From the hallway, Lorraine laughed.
“She married into this family and still doesn’t understand her place.”
Then she said the sentence I would remember for the rest of my life.
“Teach her where her place is.”
Daniel grabbed my arm and hauled me upright.
“Get dressed. Go downstairs. Make breakfast. Stop embarrassing me.”
For eight months, I had swallowed comments about my career, my clothes, my “cold” personality, and my refusal to wait on Lorraine like hired help. Daniel always called it culture, respect, family tradition.
But lately, it had become something uglier.
He had started controlling the guest list in my house. Lorraine had moved into the upstairs suite “for two weeks” and stayed three months. My jewelry had disappeared from drawers and reappeared around her neck. Daniel had taken money from our joint account without explanation.
And now this.
I looked past him toward the small black camera mounted above the hallway thermostat.
Daniel had forgotten it existed.
I had not.
Two weeks earlier, after noticing unexplained withdrawals from his restaurant company, I had quietly activated the home security archive and hired a forensic accountant through my law firm. I was an attorney specializing in financial misconduct. Daniel liked telling people I “did paperwork.”
He had no idea what kind.
He also did not know I had spent the previous evening copying bank statements after seeing a transfer to a company called LRC Hospitality. LRC were Lorraine’s initials. I had planned to confront him after I had facts, not suspicions.
Instead, he gave me something far worse before sunrise.
“Fine,” I said.
Lorraine smiled triumphantly when I entered the kitchen.
“Eggs over easy. Bacon crisp. Coffee fresh. And make pancakes for your husband.”
I opened the refrigerator, took out nothing, and placed my phone on the marble island.
Then I looked at Daniel.
“No.”
His face changed.
Lorraine blinked. “Excuse me?”
“I said no.”
Daniel stepped toward me.
My phone screen lit up.
A scheduled message had just arrived from my investigator.
