Chapter 10

We did not stay to hear another excuse.
We went straight to the emergency room.
I rode in the backseat with the mother and the baby.
She called the police on the way.
At the hospital, a pediatric trauma team took over.
They carefully cut away the newborn's contaminated cuff.
The skin beneath it was already bright red and beginning to blister.
The attending doctor explained the severity of the danger.
Chili powder on a newborn is not just a skin irritant.
If the baby had rubbed his eyes or inhaled the fine dust, it could have caused instant respiratory arrest.
It was designed to trigger a sudden, severe medical crisis.
A crisis that would require a frantic ambulance ride.
A crisis where an emergency contact would be legally notified.
Two police detectives arrived at the hospital an hour later.
The mother handed them the duplicate care form.
She pointed directly at the stranger's name.
The detectives ran the name through their database.
It took less than twenty minutes to find a match.
The name belonged to a woman with a lengthy history of medical fraud.
She operated a shadow network posing as an emergency temporary foster agency.
The plan became terrifyingly clear in that hospital room.
The caregiver was hired to induce a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction.
She was going to call an ambulance while the mother was out or asleep.
At the hospital, she would present the forged medical forms.
The forms listed the stranger as the legal medical proxy.
They were going to claim the mother was highly abusive and negligent.
May you like
They were going to use the chili powder chemical burns as physical proof of that abuse.
And the stranger would legally walk out of the hospital with the baby under the guise of protective custody.
