Part 1: The Unexpected Salute

The sheriff’s hand stopped an inch from his forehead.

For one breath, nobody moved.

Seafood sauce still dripped from Matthew’s chin onto the white tile.

Brett Barrett Jr. laughed, because he thought the sheriff had come to remove the wrong man.

“About time,” Brett said, brushing imaginary dust from his linen sleeve. “Take this old dock rat out before he ruins my father’s dinner.”

The sheriff did not turn around.

The mayor stood behind him, pale and breathing hard, as if he had run the whole length of the marina.

The tactical officers fanned out near the glass doors.

The socialites lowered their phones just enough to realize something was wrong.

Matthew stood there in his stained jacket.

Quiet.

Humiliated.

One eye red from saffron and salt.

His crushed watch lay under Brett’s polished loafer, the broken crystal catching the sunset.

Brett finally noticed the sheriff wasn’t listening.

“Sheriff,” he snapped. “I said remove him.”

The sheriff’s jaw tightened.

Then his hand completed the salute.

Not to Brett.

To Matthew.

A sharp, formal salute.

The kind men give when they know the person in front of them has already paid more than most people can imagine.

A silence fell over the terrace so fast you could hear champagne bubbles popping in glasses.

Matthew did not salute back right away.

He looked down at the broken watch.

Then at Brett.

Then at the sheriff.

“Evening, Tom,” Matthew said quietly.

The sheriff swallowed.

“Commander.”

That one word changed the air.

Brett blinked.

“Commander?” he scoffed. “Commander of what? The buffet line?”

No one laughed this time.

The mayor stepped forward.

His face had gone gray.

“Brett,” he said, voice shaking, “stop talking.”

That only made Brett angrier.

He was used to rooms bending around him.
