“You’ve never landed a commercial airliner before,” Andrew said.

“No,” Laura replied, staring straight ahead at the runway lights. “But I know how to keep an aircraft on the centerline when everything is failing.”

The heavy jet touched down. For a terrifying second, the right wing dipped precariously as the unconfirmed gear groaned under the immense weight. Laura instantly applied asymmetric thrust and manual rudder control, stabilizing the airframe until the mechanical lock finally engaged with a heavy clunk.

The engines roared in reverse thrust. The airliner slowed smoothly and came to a complete stop on the taxiway.
