Chapter 1

"Pick it up, Emily. Isn't that what they pay you for?" Vanessa's mocking voice echoed across the elegant restaurant as she deliberately dropped a spotless white napkin beside my shoes.

Three women at her table burst into laughter, while nearby diners turned to watch the humiliating scene. I stared at the napkin, then slowly raised my eyes to the woman who had once made my school years miserable.

"Oops," Vanessa said with an exaggerated smile, leaning back in her expensive leather chair. "Looks like somebody has a little cleaning to do."

I kept my expression calm and replied, "You dropped something." Her smile faltered when she realized I wasn't going to bend down.

Vanessa Mitchell had always enjoyed embarrassing people she considered less successful than herself. Now, dressed in a designer cream blazer with diamond earrings and an expensive gold watch, she appeared delighted to find me wearing a simple black waitress uniform.

She tilted her head, studying my face with theatrical surprise. "Wait a minute, you're Emily Carter, aren't you?"

I nodded politely, already knowing what was coming. Vanessa laughed and turned toward her friends.

"Oh my goodness, girls, we went to school together!" she announced. "She always talked about having big dreams, and look where she ended up!"

One of her friends gave an awkward smile, but Vanessa continued. She asked whether I had ever managed to find a real career or whether I had spent the past several years carrying plates.

I explained that there was nothing shameful about working in a restaurant. Vanessa rolled her eyes and called me overly sensitive.

"Anyway, sweetheart, that napkin isn't going to pick itself up," she said. I glanced at the perfectly clean napkin resting beside my black shoes.

"I can bring you another one," I offered. "But I won't participate in a performance designed to embarrass someone."

Vanessa's expression hardened immediately. "Excuse me?"

She leaned forward and pointed toward the floor. "I'm the paying customer, and you're the waitress, so do your job."

The restaurant grew noticeably quieter as several guests watched our exchange. My heart beat faster, but six years of managing difficult situations had taught me the value of remaining composed.

"Customer service means treating guests professionally," I answered. "It doesn't mean allowing anyone to deliberately humiliate an employee."

Vanessa stared at me in disbelief. Apparently, she had expected the same timid student she remembered from years earlier.

What she didn't know was that my life had changed dramatically since graduation. And I wasn't interested in explaining those changes simply to impress her.

"Unbelievable!" Vanessa exclaimed, grabbing her handbag. "I want to speak to your manager immediately!"

I nodded and replied, "Of course. I'll ask Daniel to come over."

Daniel Carter was standing near the restaurant's marble reception counter when I approached. Wearing a tailored charcoal suit, he looked up from his tablet and immediately noticed my expression.

"Everything alright, Emily?" he asked quietly. "Table fourteen would like to make a formal complaint," I explained.

Daniel glanced toward Vanessa's table and recognized her exaggerated gestures. A faint smile appeared on his face.

"Another customer who believes the rules don't apply to them?" he asked. "Something like that," I replied, and together we walked back across the dining room.

Vanessa straightened the moment she spotted Daniel approaching. Her entire personality seemed to change as she greeted him with an elegant, practiced smile.

"Thank goodness you're here," she announced. "Your employee has been incredibly disrespectful, and frankly, someone like her shouldn't be working in such a beautiful restaurant."

Daniel listened without interrupting. Then he turned toward me and asked, "Emily, would you like to explain what happened?"

Vanessa frowned, clearly irritated that he wanted to hear my side. She had expected him to apologize immediately and punish me in front of her friends.

"I don't need another explanation!" Vanessa snapped. "I want a formal complaint filed, and I want it delivered directly to whoever owns this establishment!"

Daniel looked at me, struggling to conceal his amusement. I remained silent, allowing him to handle the moment.

Vanessa slammed her palm against the table. "Why do you keep looking at her? I said I want the owner!"

Daniel slowly folded his hands and stepped aside, leaving me standing directly in front of Vanessa. "Well, Mrs. Mitchell," he said calmly, "that won't be difficult, because Emily Carter is the owner of this restaurant."

May you like

Vanessa's face went completely pale. Her friends stopped laughing as I calmly reached into my apron pocket and removed a small black business card.

But before I could say anything, Daniel added something that made Vanessa grip the edge of the table. "And there's one more thing you should know about the person you just tried to humiliate..."
