Chapter 2

“Where is my mother?” Michael asked.

Not “What happened?”

Not “How is Olivia?”

Just Sarah.

I looked down at my daughter curled against me, her stuffed bear tucked beneath her chin, and I realized the person I had spent four years protecting was not the person I needed to protect anymore.

“Your mother hit our daughter,” I said.

The line went quiet.

Then Michael sighed.

“Emily, you know how Sarah is. She gets overwhelmed.”

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

Because it wasn’t confusion.

It wasn’t disbelief.

It was a defense.

I walked to the bedroom door and listened as Sarah immediately started talking louder from the hallway.

“She attacked me,” she told him. “She’s trying to punish me because I corrected Olivia.”

Corrected.

That was the word she chose.

Not hurt.

Not slapped.

Corrected.

Michael asked me for the details, but every question sounded like he was searching for the part where I was the problem.

Then Olivia stirred against my shoulder.

“Mommy,” she whispered.

I looked at her cheek and felt something inside me settle.

I was done explaining why my child deserved kindness.

I opened the bedroom door.

Sarah was standing there with Michael on speakerphone, waiting for me to defend myself.

Instead, I held up the grocery receipt with the cancellation number written on it.

Sarah’s expression changed again.

“You actually did it?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“You would let me lose my procedure over this?”

I looked at Olivia.

Then I looked back at Sarah.

“The question is why you thought my daughter’s pain was something I would overlook.”

Michael finally spoke.

But before he could finish his sentence, Sarah said something that changed the entire conversation.

May you like

Something she probably thought would protect her.

Something that made me realize this was bigger than one hot dog.
