Chapter 6 - The Assassin Who Begged for Mercy

The call reached Adrian at 8:14 that evening.
Priya found Harper in the hospital cafeteria.
“Isabella contacted us.”
Harper stood.
“Why?”
“She wants to surrender.”
“To Adrian?”
“No.”
Priya hesitated.
“To you.”
Harper stared.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does to her.”
Isabella was hiding in a roadside motel outside Saratoga Springs.
Her father’s organization had collapsed faster than anyone expected.
Several senior figures had abandoned Vincent.
Others had begun cooperating with federal investigators.
And Vincent, desperate to preserve himself, had apparently decided the failed assassination had been Isabella’s independent plan.
He was willing to sacrifice his own daughter.
“She thinks her father will kill her,” Priya said.
Harper went cold.
“Will he?”
“Yes.”
Adrian did not want Harper involved.
They argued in the hospital parking garage.
“She tried to kill you.”
“She tried to kill someone.”
“She poisoned you.”
“And now she’s asking for help.”
“That doesn’t erase what she did.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Harper looked at him.
“Because if I only believe people deserve saving when I like them, then I wasn’t protecting Evelyn that night. I was just picking sides.”
Adrian was silent.
Harper stepped closer.
“You chose not to turn Vincent’s visit into a massacre.”
“That was strategic.”
“Maybe.”
“It was.”
“Fine.”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“Be strategic again.”
Forty minutes later, Isabella entered a secure warehouse office accompanied by Priya.
She looked nothing like the woman from the gala.
No diamonds.
No perfect gown.
No makeup.
Her hair was tied back.
She looked twenty-eight for the first time instead of ageless and untouchable.
Then she saw Harper.
Her eyes went to the scar.
“I didn’t know the ring would cut you that badly.”
Harper sat across from her.
“That’s the apology?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Isabella swallowed.
“My father ordered the assassination.”
“Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“If Adrian died shortly after the marriage, my father expected me to inherit enough influence to force a merger.”
Harper felt sick.
“And Evelyn?”
“Secondary target.”
Harper’s hands tightened.
Isabella noticed.
“If Evelyn died first, Adrian would become emotionally unstable. That was my father’s theory.”
“Your father sounds charming.”
“He isn’t.”
“You still agreed.”
Isabella looked down.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Silence.
Then, “Because I was raised to believe obedience was survival.”
Harper’s voice hardened.
“That explains you. It doesn’t excuse you.”
“I know.”
“You were going to hit an old woman with poison on your hand.”
Isabella’s face crumpled for the first time.
“I know.”
“You called me a maid like it made me less human.”
“I know.”
Harper leaned forward.
“Then stop saying you know and tell us something useful.”
Isabella looked through the glass wall toward Adrian.
“My father keeps records.”
That changed everything.
Accounts.
Payments.
Bribes.
Extortion.
Names.
Enough evidence not only to destroy Vincent’s remaining organization but to bury several legitimate businessmen who had quietly supported it.
Isabella offered everything in exchange for protection and the opportunity to surrender to federal authorities before her father could reach her.
Adrian listened.
When she finished, he said, “You belong in prison.”
Isabella nodded.
“I know.”
“But you’re afraid of dying.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at Harper.
Harper did not tell him what to do.
This choice needed to be his.
Finally Adrian said, “You’ll get protection until the government takes custody.”
Isabella began crying.
Not beautifully.
Not gracefully.
Like an exhausted child.
Harper felt no triumph.
That surprised her.
For months Isabella had existed in Harper’s mind as a perfect, cruel creature untouched by ordinary consequences.
Now she was simply a terrified woman who had made unforgivable choices and was finally being forced to live inside them.
When Isabella was escorted out, she stopped beside Harper.
“I’m sorry.”
Harper looked at her.
“I hope someday you understand what you’re apologizing for.”
Isabella nodded.
Then she left.
Vincent Duca was arrested eleven days later after Isabella’s records allowed investigators to connect him to multiple financial crimes, conspiracy charges, and the attempted assassination.
Dr. Mercer entered a cooperation agreement.
His medical license was suspended.

He accepted it.
His daughter remained in treatment.
