Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO QUIETED HIS SON’S NIGHTMARES

Instead of fighting her embrace, Noah’s rigid body suddenly went slack. The violent thrashing stopped as if an electric current had been cut. He clutched desperately at the front of her shirt, burying his face in the crook of her neck, and let out a long, shuddering sob—the first real, emotional cry he had released since the day of the bombing.

"I've got you, Noah," her voice came through the audio feed, clear, steady, and vibrating with an intense, fierce protection that sounded chillingly familiar. "I'm right here. Nobody is going to hurt you. You are safe."

"Don't let them burn," the boy wept into her shoulder. "My legs... I can't move my legs, Emma."

"I know, buddy. I know," she murmured, rocking him gently back and forth against the pillows just like a mother would. "You don't have to run anymore. I've got you."

I lowered the Walther PPK slowly, resting it down on the mahogany desk. My hand was trembling—not from fear, but from a profound, suffocating wave of shock. For fourteen months, I had tried to buy my son safety with concrete walls, armed guards, and millions of dollars. I had provided him with every luxury except the one thing he actually needed: a safe harbor from the ghosts haunting his mind. And here was this stranger, this woman with a hidden past and a two-year gap on her resume, holding my son in the dark and anchoring him against the storm.

As I watched them on the screen, a chilling thought struck me with sudden, terrifying force. Who is she really? And why does she know how to quiet a terror that even I couldn't reach?

Before I could process the rising tide of suspicion, the encrypted burner phone on my desk buzzed with a sharp, vibrating hum. It was Dominic Shaw, calling from the security annex downstairs.

I picked up the receiver, my eyes never leaving the monitor where Emma was now softly singing a lullaby to my sleeping son.

"Boss," Dominic’s voice came through the line, tight with urgency. "You seeing this on Cam Four?"

"I'm looking at it," I said, my voice cold and flat. "Run her file again, Dominic. Every single alias, every address, every connection. I want to know who let her into my house, and exactly what she was doing during those two missing years."

"Way ahead of you, boss," Dominic replied grimly. "And that's why I'm calling. I just decrypted a restricted medical archive from Boston. The reason Emma Reed has a two-year gap on her record... is because she used to work as a private trauma specialist for the federal witness protection program. And the last case she handled, right before she vanished off the grid?"

Dominic paused, and even through the secure digital line, I could hear the hesitation in his breath.

"Go on," I ordered, my grip tightening on the edge of the desk.

"She wasn't just a trauma nurse, boss. She was the lead witness handler for the federal task force that investigated the car bombing of Caroline Calder. She was the woman who built the entire profile on the syndicate faction that tried to kill you."

The blood drained from my face. The office seemed to spin as every piece of the puzzle violently shifted. I stared back at the monitor, where Emma Reed lay peacefully holding my son in the dark. She hadn't stumbled into my mansion by accident. She had hunted us down.
