Chapter 6

David pushed the door open.

The scene inside was a masterclass in theatrical manipulation. Eleanor sat at the head of the long mahogany table, flanked by shopping bags from high-end boutiques. My sister-in-law, Chloe, and David’s younger brother, Michael, were huddled around her. Eleanor was dabbing her dry eyes with a linen napkin, her chest heaving with exaggerated, tragic sobs.

“I turned around for one second, Chloe!” Eleanor wailed, her voice carrying the perfect pitch of a devastated matriarch. “Just one second! The crowd was so thick. She must have seen something shiny and just bolted. I searched every inch of that concourse! My heart is simply shattered!”

“Oh, Mom,” Chloe cooed, rubbing Eleanor’s back. “It’s not your fault. Kids that age, they just disappear in a blink. The police will find her.”

Michael looked up and saw us standing in the doorway. The blood drained from his face. “David? Emily? Oh my god, you found her!”

Eleanor’s head snapped up. For a fraction of a second, before she could reapply her mask of sorrow, I saw it. I saw the absolute, unmistakable flash of panic and profound irritation in her eyes. It was the look of a director whose lead actor had just wandered onto the stage in the wrong scene.

Then, the mask slammed back into place. She threw her hands in the air, a picture of divine relief. “Oh, praise the heavens! My sweet Lily! Where was she? Did a security guard find her wandering near the food court?”

The rest of the family—the cousins, Chloe, Michael—all breathed a collective sigh of relief, smiling and preparing to welcome us.

I didn’t smile. I didn’t speak.
