Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Family Business
The case took eight months to conclude.
Dad ultimately accepted a plea agreement. He admitted to forging my signature on several lending documents and using my identifying information without authorization. Because he had no previous criminal record and because much of the money had gone toward keeping the business running rather than funding personal luxury, his sentence was less severe than Madison had predicted, but it remained real: a period of incarceration followed by supervised release, restitution obligations, and restrictions related to financial management.
Mom was not charged with those same offenses, but the investigation and civil litigation left her financially ruined. She and Dad lost the house.
Whitmore Event Rentals was sold in pieces. Competitors purchased the remaining inventory. A regional event company acquired the customer list and warehouse lease.
The business that had dominated our family conversations for nearly two decades vanished in less than a year.
Madison blamed me until the day Eric filed for divorce.
That happened eleven months after the wedding. According to Eric, the marriage had been unraveling almost from the beginning. He had been em.bar.ras.sed by the scene at the reception, but what troubled him more was everything that followed. Madison had become fixated on proving that I was responsible for every consequence.
She spent money they did not have helping Mom with legal expenses. She called Eric disloyal whenever he suggested Dad had created his own problems.
The final argument came after Madison asked Eric to take out a personal loan for Mom. He refused. She threw his phone against a wall. He moved out the following morning.

I learned most of that from Eric months later when he emailed to apologize for not stepping in sooner at the wedding. I accepted his apology, but we did not become friends. I had no desire to collect people from the wreckage.
What mattered was rebuilding the pieces of my own life that had been pulled into it.
