Chapter 4 - The Interrogation Room

Sirens wailed outside five minutes later, and paramedics rushed through the side doors with a stretcher. Flynn was conscious by then, though he was barely holding on. He muttered something incoherent as they secured him onto the bed. I leaned close enough for only him to hear me. “You really should have picked a different night to try this,” I whispered.

His bloodshot eyes locked onto mine with pure venom. “You have ruined absolutely everything,” he hissed. I shook my head and replied, “No, Flynn, I just finally stopped helping you hide your true self.” His expression shifted from anger to recognition. He knew that I had finally changed into someone who would no longer take his abuse.

As the paramedics wheeled him away, a police officer entered the ballroom. Behind him, Gregory held his camera up to show he was ready. “I have the entire sequence on film,” the videographer announced. Katherine turned completely pale, and my father looked as though the floor had vanished beneath his feet. I finally understood that Flynn’s surprise was not just meant to make me sick; it was meant to destroy my marriage before it could even begin.

The police requested to speak with me in a private room off the ballroom. It was called the Orchid Suite, though there were no flowers inside, only beige walls, a long conference table, and a framed photograph of the Pacific coastline. I sat at the table in my wedding dress while Bellamy stood faithfully beside me with his hand resting on the back of my chair.

Officer Eugene Terry, a woman in her forties with a calm demeanor, asked me to begin from the very beginning. So I did. I told her about Flynn bending over my drink, the small packet hidden in his sleeve, the toast, and the moment I swapped the glasses. I did not exaggerate the details, and I did not shed a single tear. I had already cried enough over Flynn for a lifetime.

When I finished, Officer Terry looked at Bellamy. “Did you see any of this occur?” she asked. “No,” Bellamy replied, “but I definitely heard his toast and the threat he made to my wife.” Officer Terry asked if it sounded like a joke, and Benjamin replied, “To anyone else, it might have sounded like a toast, but to Audrey, it was a clear threat.”
