Eleanor shrieked and lunged for me, but a federal agent smoothly intercepted her, snapping cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"Eleanor Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, forgery, and conspiracy to commit murder," the agent stated, reading her rights as she thrashed in his grip.
Vance finally snapped out of his stupor. He crawled toward my feet, tears streaming down his face, his arrogant charm entirely evaporated. "Sloane, please! I was manipulated by them! I never wanted this! I still love you!"

I looked down at the man I had served in silence for three agonizing years, feeling nothing but absolute, freezing pity. I gently kicked his reaching hand away with the pointed toe of my heel. "You don't know the meaning of the word, Vance."
I turned my back as they dragged Eleanor away screaming and Richard collapsed into a chair, clutching his chest. I walked out of the boardroom, breathing in the scent of absolute victory, ready to build an empire of my own.
