Chapter 1

At the family dinner, my husband poured hot soup on my head while his mother laughed.. Then he said "You've got 10 minutes to get out." I wiped my face pulled some papers from my bag laid them on the table and said calmly "You're right." 10 minutes later...

The soup hit my head before I even saw my husband lift the bowl. One second I was sitting at my own dining table; the next, burning broth was running through my hair while my mother-in-law laughed.

“Daniel!” I gasped.

The ceramic bowl slammed onto the table.

Carrots and noodles slid down my blouse. My scalp screamed from the heat, but the humiliation hurt worse.

Across from me, Margaret covered her mouth, barely pretending to hide her smile.

“Oh, don’t be dramatic, Claire,” she said. “It wasn’t boiling.”

Daniel leaned back in his chair as if he had just won an argument instead of assaulted his wife.

For eleven years, I had loved that man.

For eleven years, I had paid more than half our expenses, supported his career, tolerated his mother’s insults, and convinced myself every ugly moment was temporary.

Tonight, something inside me finally went silent.

Daniel pointed toward the hallway.

“You’ve got ten minutes to get out.”

Margaret’s smile widened.

I stared at him.

“Out?”

“Out of this house.”

He spoke slowly, enjoying every word.

“My mother was right. You’ve been poisoning this family for years.”

Margaret lifted her wineglass.

“You should have learned gratitude.”

I took a napkin and carefully wiped soup from my eyes.

Neither of them knew that three weeks earlier, I had discovered the second bank account.

They didn’t know I had found transfers from my company totaling $184,000.

They didn’t know Daniel had forged my electronic authorization on three transactions.

And they certainly didn’t know where $63,000 of that money had gone.

Margaret’s newly renovated condo.

Daniel mistook my silence for defeat.

“Nine minutes.”

I reached underneath my chair and picked up my leather bag.

Margaret laughed.

“Look at her. She’s actually leaving.”

I opened the bag.

But instead of taking out my keys, I removed a thick blue folder.

I placed six documents on the table.

Daniel’s smile weakened.

“What’s that?”

I looked directly into his eyes.

The first document was a divorce petition.

The second was a forensic accounting report.

The third was a notice removing him as chief operating officer of my company.

The fourth contained copies of every suspicious transfer.

The fifth was a civil fraud complaint naming Daniel.

The sixth named Margaret.

I calmly straightened the pages.

Then I smiled.

“You’re right.”

Daniel frowned.

“About what?”

I checked the clock above the kitchen doorway.

“You gave me ten minutes.”

My phone vibrated once inside my bag.

The signal I had been waiting for.

May you like

I looked back at him.

“Let’s see what ten minutes can change.”
