Chapter 7 - AN APOLOGY THAT CAME TOO LATE

Seven months after the night Audra left, they had dinner.

Not reconciliation.

Dinner.

She chose the restaurant.

She drove herself.

She kept the keys to her apartment.

Dorian was already seated when she arrived.

He stood.

“You look well.”

“You look nervous.”

“I am.”

Audra almost smiled.

They ate.

They talked about Graham’s new house.

About Silas’s arthritis.

About Audra’s firm.

Then Dorian put down his fork.

“I know what I’m sorry for now.”

She went still.

He did not reach for her hand.

“I’m sorry I trained myself to notice your value only when I needed it.”

Audra watched him.

“I’m sorry I made your competence part of the furniture. Something dependable enough to stop thanking.”

Her eyes lowered.

“I’m sorry I betrayed you.”

He swallowed.

“Not because you left. Not because it cost me money. Not because Everett used it against me. I’m sorry because I looked at a woman who trusted me and decided my appetite mattered more than her reality.”

Audra’s eyes filled.

He continued.

“And I’m sorry I gave Blythe your mother’s necklace because you were right. That wasn’t just cheating. I had started thinking everything near me was mine to distribute.”

A tear slipped down Audra’s face.

She wiped it away.

Dorian’s voice cracked.

“I don’t know when I became that man.”

Audra looked directly at him.

“You didn’t become him in one day.”

“No.”

“And you don’t stop being him in one day either.”

“I know.”

That mattered.

Not enough.

But it mattered.

Their divorce became final in August.

They went to dinner that night too.

It was Audra’s idea.

“Feels strange,” Dorian said.

“It is strange.”

“Are you sad?”

“Yes.”

“Me too.”

They drank coffee afterward.

No grand declaration.

No remarriage.

No promise that pain had become meaningful enough to justify itself.

Some pain is simply pain.

But they kept seeing each other.

Slowly.

Badly sometimes.

Honestly more often.

May you like

Audra kept her apartment.

Dorian never asked when she planned to give it up.
