Chapter 11

Celeste’s second statement lasted nearly four hours.
Raffaele did not attend.
That mattered.
When Claire returned, she carried no dramatic confession.
Only a clearer timeline.
Celeste had not known about the attempt on Raffaele before Anna died.
Six weeks afterward, she found Marcus burning old Northbridge paperwork in a fire pit behind his house.
She confronted him.
Marcus admitted he had “made a move against Raffaele” that went wrong.
He did not give details.
Celeste did not go to Raffaele.
That choice became the central betrayal.
She protected her brother.
Then she grew closer to the widower her brother had apparently tried to kill.
Raffaele struggled to understand it.
“She married me knowing.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She says she loved you.”
He laughed once.
Claire did not.
“She may have.”
“That makes it worse.”
“Yes.”
Celeste claimed she convinced herself Marcus had only intended to frighten Raffaele or stage some kind of road incident.
She avoided asking questions because answers would force action.
When she married Raffaele, she believed Marcus had abandoned whatever ambitions caused the original plot.
Then Lucy overheard the argument.
Everything Celeste had refused to face returned at once.
Raffaele stood by the window.
Teresa entered later that evening.
He told her the major finding.
She sat down.
For several minutes neither spoke.
Finally Teresa said:
“Anna died in your car.”
“Yes.”
“Because somebody wanted you dead.”
“Yes.”
Raffaele waited for blame.
Teresa gave him something worse.
“You’re going to spend the rest of your life trying to turn that into a punishment for yourself.”
He looked at her.
“She warned me.”
“You ignored her.”
“Yes.”
“That was wrong.”
“Yes.”
“But Marcus made the choice.”
Raffaele said nothing.
Teresa continued.
“If you make yourself responsible for his crime, you’re still letting him control the story.”
Upstairs, Lucy cried from a nightmare.
Raffaele went to her.
She asked for Celeste.
That surprised him.
For nine months, Celeste had tucked her into bed.
Read stories.
Braided her hair.
Cut strawberries into little hearts.
A person could love a child and still do something terrible to her.
Raffaele had no simple explanation.
Neither did Lucy.

That night he understood the truth would not repair his daughter’s confusion.
It would only tell him which damage belonged to whom.
