Chapter 8

For a moment, Preston sounded exactly as he had behind that dining room door.
Confident that comfort could become a cage if someone feared losing it enough.
Charlotte looked over her shoulder.
“No, Preston.”
Her voice was quiet.
“I already walked away from everything you could take.”
The problem was that Preston had one last weapon.
The six hundred thousand dollars had originated from a vendor tied indirectly to one of Damon’s holding companies.
The authorization showing Preston ordered the transfer existed in Damon’s complete internal financial ledger.
So did records of older transactions Damon’s attorneys had spent years shielding from scrutiny.
If Damon released the ledger, Charlotte could be cleared before the hearing.
But Damon would expose himself.
His attorney explained the consequences plainly.
Loss of management authority.
Massive fines.
Possible criminal charges.
Hundreds of employees could be affected.
Damon sat silently.
His security chief offered another solution.
“Preston is terrified. Give me one night.”
Damon looked at him.
“What happens in one night?”
“By morning, he withdraws everything.”
“And if he refuses?”
The security chief’s silence said enough.
Months earlier, Damon might have accepted that answer.
Instead, he remembered Charlotte standing in her apartment.
Do not turn my truth into something that depends on a mafia boss’s permission.
“Nobody touches Preston.”
His security chief frowned.
“The men will call that weakness.”
“Then they can learn the spelling.”
Damon turned to his attorney.
“Give investigators the ledger.”
“All of it?”
“All of it.”
“You may lose your companies.”
“Put independent management in place. Protect the employees.”
“You could face prison.”
Damon looked toward the Chicago River.
For most of his life, power had meant controlling which truths arrived and when.
He had used that belief once to justify silence with Charlotte.
He would not make the same choice twice.
“Send it.”
Charlotte learned what he had done from her attorney the next morning.
There was no message from Damon.
No flowers.
No request that she understand what his sacrifice meant.
He released the truth and allowed her to decide what it meant.
For the first time since sending him away, Charlotte admitted that she missed him.
Missing him, she reminded herself, was not forgiveness.
Both truths could exist.
Preston discovered the ledger had been released at 1:40 the following morning.
His authorization code sat beside the transfer.
So did a note he believed he had deleted.
At 2:13 a.m., he attempted to erase Grand Meridian’s digital archive remotely.
When that failed, he paid a former technology manager to enter the building and destroy the backups.

Security caught the man inside the server room.
But several critical files were already gone.
