Chapter 5 - Behind the Green Door
The next morning, officers searched the old warehouse on the outskirts of Columbus. In the basement, they found a weathered green door with a keyhole shaped like a laurel branch.
Noah’s silver charm fit perfectly.
Beyond it stood rows of filing cabinets, hard drives, medical binders, photographs, and payment records. One wall displayed pictures of children who had been assigned to wealthy applicants before the courts had completed their reviews.
Among them was Clara’s newborn photograph.
Beneath it appeared the words: “Reserved placement.”
Caleb had never felt anger so quiet or so complete. His daughter had been discussed as though she were an item on a waiting list.
The archive gave investigators enough evidence to close Havenbridge, suspend several officials, and begin returning improperly transferred children to their families. Harrison Creed was taken into custody after attempting to remove documents from a private office connected to the warehouse.
During the emergency custody hearing that followed, Creed’s attorneys claimed Meredith had willingly signed her children over to Havenbridge. The judge listened until Detective Sloan presented hospital records proving that Meredith could not have signed the documents at the stated time.
Then Noah asked to speak.
His feet did not touch the floor when he sat in the witness chair, yet his voice remained clear.
“My mom told me to lock the door and only open it for Dad. She didn’t leave us because she wanted to. She left because she thought the bad man would follow her instead.”
The judge looked toward Caleb.
“And did your father come?”
Noah nodded.
“Yes. He came when I called.”

Temporary custody remained with Caleb while Meredith recovered, but the court also recognized that she had acted under prolonged coercion. Her case was reviewed with care rather than punishment.
For the first time in years, she and Caleb left a courtroom walking on the same side.
