Chapter 4 - HE TRADED CONTROL

Back in Boston, Nolan entered the boardroom knowing he might leave unemployed.

Henry Caldwell, the oldest director, placed a folder on the table.

Bellweather.

“You want to build your defense around ethical investing?” Henry asked. “After this?”

Nolan looked at the photographs.

The shuttered factory.

The laid-off workers.

Thomas Ellison’s name buried among the termination records.

Mara sat outside the boardroom with Rebecca.

She could hear nothing.

For ninety-two minutes, no one came out.

Then the doors opened.

Henry left first.

His face told her nothing.

Two directors followed.

Finally Nolan appeared.

Mara stood.

“Well?”

“I’m still CEO.”

Rebecca exhaled.

Mara smiled.

Then Nolan added, “For six months.”

Her smile faded.

“What?”

“The board approved the Ortega partnership. In exchange, I agreed to begin a succession process.”

Rebecca stared at him.

“You resigned?”

“Eventually.”

“You built this company.”

“I know.”

“Henry forced you?”

Nolan shook his head.

“No. They wanted the old deal or my resignation. I gave them a third choice.”

Mara understood before Rebecca did.

“You traded control.”

“For time.”

“To prove the partnership works.”

“Yes.”

“And if it does?”

“I still leave the CEO job.”

Rebecca whispered, “Nolan, why?”

He looked through the glass wall at hundreds of employees moving through an empire that carried his name.

“Because I realized something in Santa Fe.”

May you like

“What?”

“I don’t have to own something forever for it to matter.”
