Chapter 7

## Dominic

Hannah did not remain a maid.

She resigned three weeks after the gala.

Dominic accepted letter.

No argument.

She returned to medical school the following fall.

At thirty.

Older than most classmates.

More tired.

Less afraid.

Dominic helped with tuition?

No.

She used settlement money from Whitmore civil case and scholarships.

She wanted that one herself.

He respected it.

Good.

They stayed in contact.

At first because Eleanor.

Then Daniel.

Then because neither wanted to stop.

Coffee.

Dinner.

Long walks along lake.

No secret affair.

No employer.

No fiancée.

No debt ledger.

One evening, almost a year later, Dominic asked:

“Can I kiss you?”

Hannah laughed.

“You ask?”

“I am learning.”

“Slowly.”

“Yes.”

She said yes.

That was beginning.

Not rescue.

Not repayment.

Choice.

---

Charles Whitmore was extradited eighteen months later.

Illness did not erase charges.

He went to trial in wheelchair.

Hannah testified.

So did Vanessa by video.

So did Eleanor.

Victor.

Daniel.

Dominic.

Charles was convicted of conspiracy in Thomas Reed’s murder, fraud, bribery, illegal medical-trial concealment, and other crimes.

He died in federal medical custody four years later.

Hannah did not visit.

She did not need final words.

Thomas Reed had already given her better ones.

Blood makes a fact. Love makes a father.

---

Dominic dismantled what remained of his father’s criminal machinery.

He turned over records.

Sold some businesses.

Legitimized others under independent management.

He faced consequences for crimes he had personally authorized.

Fines.

Probation.

Loss of licenses.

Public disgrace.

Not enough for everyone.

Too much for some.

Real accountability rarely satisfies every observer.

But he stopped pretending being less cruel than Salvatore made him clean.

Hannah respected that more than money.
