Chapter 1

EVERY NIGHT, THE WEALTHY MAN’S SIX-YEAR-OLD SON SCREAMED—BUT NO ONE WANTED TO UNDERSTAND WHY…

It was almost 2:00 a.m. when another scream tore through the enormous Whitmore estate.

The sound echoed through the marble halls.

Several staff members froze.

Nobody needed to ask where it came from.

Oliver’s bedroom.

The six-year-old had been screaming almost every night since his mother died.

And tonight was no different.

Daniel Whitmore, Oliver’s father, stood beside the enormous bed wearing the same wrinkled suit he had worn the previous day.

He looked exhausted.

For weeks, he had barely slept.

He had meetings.

Business deals.

A company worth millions.

But none of it mattered anymore.

His home had become a place of sleepless nights and unanswered screams.

“Oliver, enough,” Daniel snapped.

The little boy was crying beneath the blankets.

“I don't want to sleep here, Daddy.”

“You said that yesterday.”

“Please…”

“I need sleep too.”

Daniel walked toward him and tried to put him back against the pillows.

The moment Oliver’s head touched the large silk pillow at the head of the bed, his entire body suddenly stiffened.

His eyes widened.

Then he screamed.

“DADDY! STOP!”

Daniel pulled back.

“What now?”

Oliver grabbed his neck and sobbed.

“It hurts!”

Daniel stared at him.

The boy was shaking uncontrollably.

“Oliver, nothing is hurting you.”

“Yes, it is!”

“Enough with the drama.”

Daniel was too exhausted to understand what he was seeing.

He thought his son was afraid of sleeping alone.

He thought Oliver was acting out because he missed his mother.

So Daniel walked out.

The bedroom door slammed shut.

Silence filled the hallway.

But someone had seen everything.

Rosa Alvarez, the newest caretaker, stood in the shadows.

She had worked in wealthy homes for years.

She had no medical degree.

No fancy education.

But she had raised three children of her own.

And she knew the difference between a child throwing a tantrum…

and a child experiencing real pain.

Rosa waited until Daniel disappeared.

Then she quietly entered Oliver’s room.

The little boy was curled into a ball, crying.

Rosa didn't touch him.

She simply sat beside the bed.

“Oliver,” she whispered, “can you tell me where it hurts?”

The boy slowly pointed toward the pillow.

“There.”

Rosa frowned.

“The pillow?”

Oliver nodded.

“Every time Daddy puts my head there.”

Rosa carefully examined the pillow without moving Oliver.

Then she noticed something strange.

There was a small dark stain near the edge of the silk cover.

She reached for it.

Oliver suddenly grabbed her wrist.

“No!”

Rosa froze.

“Why not, sweetheart?”

Oliver looked toward the closed bedroom door.

Then he whispered something that made Rosa’s blood run cold.

“Mommy told me never to let Daddy look inside.”

Rosa stared at him.

“Look inside what?”

Oliver pointed at the pillow.

“There’s something inside.”

May you like

Rosa slowly turned toward it.

And for the first time, she wondered if Oliver’s nightly screams had nothing to do with nightmares at all.
