Chapter 10 - Justice and Healing

Gabriel turned to look at Victoria. “Victoria,” Gabriel said. “Our engagement ends here.”

“No!” she screamed. “Gabriel, no! You can’t do this! I love you! I’ll change! I swear I’ll change!” She crawled toward him, clinging to his leg.

Gabriel bent down gently and peeled Victoria’s fingers away. “You should have changed before you hurt people,” Gabriel said. “Not now. Not when you’ve been exposed.”

Nana Teresa stepped forward and knelt beside Victoria. “Child,” Nana Teresa said. “I believe there’s still time to change. But before you can change, you have to face the consequences of what you’ve done. You have to pay for your sins.”

Victoria signed the document prepared by Gabriel’s lawyer. She would repay the money, cooperate with investigators, and accept her punishment. Two guards lifted Victoria to her feet and escorted her out. Before she left, she turned: “Gabriel, I truly love you. The love I felt for you was real.”

“I wish you’d shown that love through honesty instead of through lies.” The doors closed behind her. A chapter ended.

The party ended in silence. Gabriel stood alone on the balcony, staring out into the dark garden. An hour later, he saw Evelyn stacking chairs alone. Gabriel walked toward her. “You changed everything today,” Gabriel said. “If you hadn’t spoken up for Henry, we wouldn’t have seen Victoria’s true face. You used your voice to protect those who don’t have a voice.”

Evelyn felt her eyes sting. “Thank you. But I truly didn’t do anything special. I just couldn’t stand there while someone was being treated unfairly.”

Gabriel nodded. “And that’s why I respect you, Evelyn Sinclair.”

One week later, Gabriel summoned Henry to ask about Evelyn. Henry told him about Evelyn’s orphaned past and her sister Chloe’s heart condition—the $200,000 surgery she was working three jobs to afford. One week later, Evelyn received a letter from the hospital: the entire $200,000 cost for Chloe’s surgery had been paid in full by an anonymous benefactor. Evelyn clutched the letter and broke into sobs. She knew it was Gabriel.

6 months later, Richard Donovan was cleared completely and reunited with his daughter. He opened an electronics repair shop. Chloe’s surgery was successful. Victoria received a suspended sentence and began therapy. Evelyn was promoted to event manager of the Thornon estate.

One spring evening, Gabriel and Evelyn stood side by side on the estate balcony. “Thank you, Evelyn,” Gabriel said. “You made a difference just by being brave.” Evelyn turned and smiled—a true, radiant smile. It was the smile of someone who had finally found peace. Justice had arrived. Truth had been brought into the light. Broken hearts were beginning to heal.
