Chapter 4

My attorney and I contacted state law enforcement and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

We turned over the badge records, climate-control data, toxicology findings, and copies of the messages from Marcus’s phone.

Investigators also recovered the internal audit Mark had started from an encrypted folder on his laptop.

It showed months of false invoices submitted through three shell vendors.

More than $3.2 million had left Vance Logistics in under a year for fictitious “refrigeration maintenance.”

Investigators traced the shell companies to Veronica’s brother-in-law.

That explained the missing money.

Marcus’s role became clearer after investigators found an old email exchange Mark had archived.

Three months earlier, Marcus had approved several major wire transfers without reviewing the invoices.

When Mark challenged him, Marcus had responded:

“Veronica says these are urgent equipment fees. I trust her judgment. Stop looking for problems where there aren’t any.”

Marcus hadn’t created the scheme.

But he had ignored obvious warning signs.

And once he realized Veronica’s fraud could expose his negligence and devastate him financially, he helped hide what had happened to Mark.

Three days before Mark was poisoned, he had sent Veronica one final message.

“I am handing these invoices over to an external forensic team on Friday.”

That was the moment everything accelerated.

Doctors concluded that the combination of Zolpidem, Clonazepam, and severe environmental cold had profoundly suppressed Mark’s breathing and other vital signs.

His strong cardiovascular health may have helped him survive the extreme hypothermia long enough to be discovered.

Dr. Salgado, meanwhile, had been receiving payments connected to Veronica’s shell companies under the label of “corporate wellness consulting.”

Investigators determined that he had signed off on Mark’s death without performing the level of verification such a situation required and without taking him to a major emergency department.

The goal had been to prevent further medical scrutiny and avoid questions.

They believed the plan had worked.

They had not accounted for Chloe.

She stayed beside her father when every adult in the room had already accepted that he was gone.

She noticed the faint condensation beneath his nose.

She felt the barely perceptible movement against her ear.

While everyone else trusted the paperwork, Chloe kept watching Mark.

Six weeks later, state and federal authorities moved forward with arrests.

Veronica Miller was charged with attempted first-degree murder, corporate fraud, and grand larceny.

Dr. Salgado was arrested in connection with the attempted murder, falsified medical records, and professional misconduct, and his medical license was revoked.

Marcus Vance was also arrested for his role in the conspiracy, obstruction, and corporate misconduct.

During the proceedings, prosecutors presented the climate-control records, access logs, toxicology findings, financial records, and recovered messages.

Facing a lengthy prison sentence, Veronica entered a guilty plea and implicated both Marcus and Salgado as part of her agreement.

Mark spent three weeks in intensive rehabilitation recovering from neurological inflammation and nerve damage caused by the extreme cold.

The day he finally walked through our front door by himself, Chloe did not rush toward him.
