Chapter 2

The corridor smelled like bleach and cold metal.

Luca didn’t run like a man escaping. He ran like a man already three steps ahead.

Vanessa caught him at the loading dock, drove her forearm into his throat, and pinned him against a delivery van.

He didn’t fight back.

That told her everything.

“You’re not surprised,” she said.

Luca’s mouth curved, blood at the corner of it.

“I trained soldiers for eleven years. I know what a real fighter looks like walking into a room.”

“I just never thought Damien would marry one and not notice.”

“Where’s the case going.”

“Home. Same as you.”

The word landed wrong. Too personal.

She pressed harder.

“Say that again.”

“You think I picked tonight because Damien’s careless?”

His breath came short, but his voice held.

“I picked tonight because you’re here. Because whoever you really are, you’ll want what’s in this case more than he ever will.”

Something in her chest that had stayed bolted for three years groaned on its hinge.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

His voice dropped, almost gentle, the way a man talks right before he uses the truth like a blade.

“I know your maiden name wasn’t Hail. I know a man named Reyes ran the east docks — before your husband’s father decided they were worth more without him.”

The world narrowed to the space between them.

“That’s not—”

“Twenty-two years ago. A boat fire. Ruled an accident. You were nine.”

Her arm trembled once. Only once.

“It’s in here.”

He lifted the case an inch. The only leverage he had left.

“Everything his father buried. Names. Orders. Signatures.”

Her father’s face rose up — laughing on a dock that no longer existed.

“You wanted me to find out tonight.” Her voice had gone quiet. “Why.”

“Because a woman who learns the truth doesn’t protect the man who buried it.”

His eyes were almost apologetic.

“She helps me burn the whole family down. Starting with him.”

For one heartbeat, Vanessa saw exactly what he wanted her to become. A woman with nothing left to lose.

Then she saw Damien’s face in the lounge, blood under his fingers, looking at her like she was the only steady thing left standing.

She leaned in until he had nowhere left to look but at her.

“You picked the wrong wife to weaponize.”

She drove her knee up. Luca folded. The case slipped from his hand — she caught it before it struck the ground.

Two more men were already moving into the stairwell behind him, unhurried.

Luca dragged himself upright against the van, blood on his teeth.

“Ask him what happened to your father’s ledger, Vanessa. Ask him why Damien’s father kept it instead of destroying it.”

She didn’t turn around.

But she heard the door behind him open. Heard boots. More than two sets.

Heard him laugh — low, satisfied.

He’d never planned to win this fight himself.

He’d only needed to make sure she couldn’t walk away clean.
