Chapter 4

By noon the story had a second life. Not the livestream — something quieter, and far more dangerous to people like Brandon and Tiffany. Three venture firms that had been circling Monroe Capital suddenly stopped returning calls. A hotel chain that sponsored Tiffany’s platform pulled her contract “pending review.” A modeling agency representing one of her friends issued a statement distancing itself within the hour.

None of it had Gabriel Hayes’s name attached to it anywhere. That was the part that frightened people who understood how this world actually worked — the silence was the signature.

“Who is this guy,” Tiffany’s father demanded over the phone, pacing his office, “and why does every door I knock on suddenly have his fingerprints on it?”

“I don’t know,” Tiffany said. Her voice had lost the bright, performative edge it wore on camera. “I didn’t know she was married to anyone important. It was just — content.”

“Content.” Her father’s laugh had no humor in it. “You humiliated a man’s wife for content, and now I’m about to lose a hotel deal I spent three years building.”

“Dad—”

“Take the video down.”

“It’s already everywhere. Taking it down won’t undo six million views.”

The line went quiet except for his breathing.

“Then you’d better hope he’s a man who forgives.”
