Chapter 1

“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! AND TAKE THAT FILTHY LITTLE BRAT WITH YOU!” the mafia boss’s fiancée screamed at a terrified maid and her three-year-old daughter. But she had no idea the most feared man in New York was watching from the staircase—and the secret he was about to uncover would change everything.
Isabella Romano’s furious voice echoed through the marble hallway of the magnificent Moretti estate.
Three-year-old Lily stood frozen in her tiny socks decorated with yellow ducks.
In her trembling hand was a small golden button.
She had found it beneath a table and innocently offered it to Isabella, believing the beautiful woman might appreciate her discovery.
Instead, she received a cruel humiliation.
“Please, Miss Romano,” Rosa Mendes whispered, dropping to her knees beside her daughter. “She didn't mean any harm.”
Isabella glared at them.
“Then teach your daughter where she belongs!”
The servants watched in horrified silence.
Mr. Bruno, the elderly butler, gripped his silver tray so tightly that his hands trembled.
Nobody dared intervene.
Because Isabella wasn't just another wealthy guest.
She was engaged to Alessandro Moretti, the thirty-eight-year-old mafia boss whose powerful family controlled operations stretching from Brooklyn to New Jersey.
And their marriage was supposed to end a decade-long conflict between the Moretti and Romano families.
But Isabella had never loved Alessandro.
She loved his fortune, his influence, and the authority she believed his name would give her.
For six months, she had treated the estate's servants with growing contempt.
And nobody had suffered more quietly than Rosa.
At thirty-one, Rosa had spent four years cleaning the enormous mansion, arriving every morning at precisely 6:45.
Her daughter usually stayed near the kitchen, playing with a stuffed rabbit named Bun while Rosa worked.
Alessandro had seen Lily countless times.
Something about the little girl's enormous dark eyes always unsettled him.
They reminded him of his mother, Elena Moretti, who had died in a mysterious car accident outside Naples when he was twelve.
But he had always dismissed the resemblance.
Until that morning.
Standing unnoticed at the top of the grand staircase, Alessandro had witnessed everything.
He saw Isabella's cruelty.
He saw Rosa desperately shielding her daughter.
And when Lily lifted her frightened face, something inside him shifted.
Those eyes.
That familiar expression.
The strange feeling he had ignored for four years suddenly became impossible to dismiss.
His footsteps echoed against the marble.
The hallway fell silent.
Isabella turned, expecting her powerful fiancé to defend her.
Instead, Alessandro walked straight past her.
Then something extraordinary happened.
The feared Don Moretti lowered himself onto one knee before the little girl.
He reached beneath the console table, retrieved the fallen golden button, and gently offered it back.
Lily hesitated.
Then her tiny fingers wrapped around his thumb.
Alessandro stared into her eyes.
His expression changed.
Recognition.
Disbelief.
And something dangerously close to heartbreak.
He slowly stood.
“Rosa and Lily are not going anywhere,” he declared.
Isabella's face hardened.
“Alessandro, surely you don't expect me to tolerate—”
“Upstairs. Now.”
Two words.
Enough to silence her completely.
When Isabella disappeared, Alessandro ordered everyone else to leave.
Soon, only three people remained in the enormous hallway.
Rosa.
Her sleeping daughter.
And the man whose family name could terrify an entire city.
Alessandro approached slowly.
“Rosa. Look at me.”
She raised her tear-filled eyes.
For several seconds, he studied her face as though searching for an answer he had been afraid to discover.
Then he asked the question that made her blood run cold.
“Why have you never told me she's our daughter?”
Rosa stopped breathing.
Her arms tightened around Lily.
Alessandro's voice trembled.
May you like
“She has my mother's eyes.”
And when Rosa finally opened her mouth to answer, Alessandro realized the truth might be far more devastating than he had imagined...
