Chapter 26

It rained twenty minutes before the ceremony.

The cake leaned slightly.

Michael forgot his reading glasses.

Eddie cried before Marcy reached the aisle and denied it afterward.

Claire caught the bouquet entirely by accident and tried to hand it to someone else.

And Dustin?

When Marcy appeared, he forgot everybody else existed.

I walked beside her.

Halfway down the aisle, she squeezed my arm.

“You okay?”

“No.”

She laughed softly.

“Good no or bad no?”

“The best kind.”

At the front, Dustin held out his hand.

I looked at it.

Then at him.

A year and a half earlier, I had walked into his gym convinced that strength would solve everything.

I had been wrong.

Strength had helped.

But truth helped more.

Patience helped more.

People willing to change helped more.

I placed Marcy’s hand in his.

Then I whispered so only he could hear:

“Keep earning it.”

He nodded.

“Every day.”

I believed he meant it.

Maybe that was the biggest change of all.

Later, after the ceremony, I found Marcy alone for a moment near the porch.

The rain had stopped.

Small drops clung to the trees.

Music drifted from the yard.

“You happy?” I asked.

She looked across the lawn.

Her mother dancing badly.

Eddie arguing with Michael about barbecue.

Claire laughing.

Dustin searching the crowd for his bride.

Then Marcy looked at me.

“Yes.”

A simple word.

Once, she had spoken to me through fear, telling me not to act because she believed the world around her was more dangerous than we could handle.

Now she stood in the same hometown, surrounded by people who knew one another more truthfully than before.

Not perfectly.

Truth didn’t create perfect families.

It created honest ones.

I kissed her forehead.

“Then go.”

“Where?”

I nodded toward Dustin.

“He’s looking for you.”

She smiled.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you for coming back from the gym that night instead of doing something stupid.”

I pretended to be offended.

“I have excellent judgment.”

She laughed.

“So does Mom know you went there planning to scare him?”

May you like

“Your mother knows everything.”

“She usually does.”
