Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Patient

At 1:17 in the morning, a dying man was rushed into my emergency room with multiple gunshot wounds—and the second I saw his face, six years of anger crashed through me at once. Dante Moretti had vanished from my life without saying goodbye, never knowing I was pregnant, and now the most feared crime lord in Seattle was bleeding beneath my hands while our six-year-old daughter slept only five miles away.

“Male, thirty-eight! Multiple gunshot wounds! Pressure seventy-eight over forty and falling!”

I had already been awake for nineteen hours, but exhaustion disappeared the second the paramedics rolled him into Trauma Two.

“Sir, can you hear me?”

No response.

I reached for his jaw to open his airway.

Then I saw him.

Dante.

Older. Harder. Silver beginning at his temples, a scar running toward his jaw—but unmistakably the same man who once stood barefoot in my kitchen on Sunday mornings complaining that Seattle coffee was too weak.

My hands froze for half a second.

Six years earlier, Dante had kissed my forehead before I fell asleep.

When I woke up, he was gone.

All he left was a handwritten note beside the coffeemaker.

Claire, I’m sorry. Don’t look for me. Please build a life without me.

I read those words nineteen times.

Then I took the pregnancy test I had been too afraid to use the night before.

Positive.

Two pink lines.

Dante hadn’t only abandoned me.

He had disappeared before learning he was going to be a father.

“Dr. Callahan?”

The nurse’s voice pulled me back.

“Chest tube,” I ordered. “Now.”

I buried every memory and became a doctor again.

His oxygen dropped.

“Eighty-one!”

“Come on.”

Blood poured through the chest tube.

The monitor screamed.

“Pressure’s crashing!”

I pressed against the wound.

Then his name slipped out before I could stop myself.

“Dante.”

His eyelids moved.

For one impossible second, those dark brown eyes opened.

Mia’s eyes.

Our daughter had inherited them perfectly.

Recognition flashed across his face.

“Stay with me,” I whispered.

His lips moved, but no sound came.

Then his eyes closed again.

I refused to let him die.

Not because I had forgiven him.

Not because six years had erased what he did.

I wanted answers.

Two hours later, surgeons had stabilized him enough to transfer him into intensive care.

Armed men in dark suits appeared throughout the hospital almost immediately.

That was when the life Dante had hidden from me years earlier became impossible to ignore.

He had once told me his family owned import warehouses.

After he disappeared, I discovered the truth.

The Moretti organization controlled ports, trucking companies, construction firms, nightclubs, private security, and businesses that changed names whenever investigators looked too closely.

Newspapers called Dante a businessman.

Others called him Seattle’s quiet underworld king.

I called him a coward.

After surgery, I stood alone beside a scrub sink when my phone buzzed.

My neighbor Kate had texted.

Mia finally fell asleep. She wanted me to tell you Moonlight won the race today.

Despite everything, I smiled.

Moonlight was my daughter’s imaginary racehorse.

Tell her I’m proud of Moonlight. And tell her I love her.

Kate immediately replied.

You okay?

Before I could answer, a nurse appeared behind me.

“Dr. Callahan?”

I turned.

“Mr. Moretti is awake.”

My heart stopped.

May you like

“And he keeps asking for you.”
