Chapter 4 - Waiting for the Call

He called his attorney, Daniel Price, a former federal prosecutor who had spent the last decade defending difficult clients.
Daniel answered sounding irritated.
Then Luca explained what had happened.
By the time he finished, Daniel sounded wide awake.
"Tell me you haven't sent anyone after Mercer."
"No."
"Tell me you haven't touched Shaw's phone beyond what Elena already did."
"We've opened messages and played one recording."
Daniel exhaled.
"Stop there. Preserve it. Don't delete anything. And don't contact Mercer again."
"He's holding a woman and her child."
"Then this is an active kidnapping. Call the NYPD immediately. I'll contact the FBI duty office and meet you."
Luca looked at me.
"Elena makes the call."
Daniel paused.
"Good. She needs to report exactly what happened, including the death."
I stared at Luca's phone.
Suddenly I was afraid of a completely different man.
Not Mercer.
Not Shaw.
The detective who would look at the dead body and decide that I had deliberately killed someone.
Luca saw it.
"Elena."
I looked up.
"You don't have to pretend you're fearless."
"What if they arrest me?"
"Then Daniel makes certain you have counsel, and you tell the truth."
"And if they don't believe me?"
His eyes met mine.
"Then we fight for the truth through the courts."
Not with threats.
Not with men carrying guns.
Through the courts.
For the first time, I believed he might actually mean it.
I dialed 911.
I gave my name.
I told the dispatcher about Shaw, the coatroom, the assault, the emergency call, and the threats against Caroline and Noah.
Then I gave them the photograph and the pier location.
When the dispatcher told me officers were being sent, I began shaking again.
Luca sat beside me.
He stayed there until the police arrived.
The next forty minutes passed in a haze of questions.
Two detectives interviewed me while a crime-scene technician documented my swollen wrist and the marks along my arms.
I surrendered Shaw's phone.
My dress was collected as evidence.
The detectives informed me that a man had been found dead in the coatroom and that investigators were working to establish the circumstances.
One of them, Detective Angela Torres, studied me for a long moment.
"Miss Russo, you understand that leaving the scene makes our investigation more complicated."
"I know."
"Why did you leave?"
I looked down at my hands.
"Because I thought if I stayed there, someone else would come through the door."
"Someone working for Mercer?"
"Yes."
Torres glanced at her partner.
Then she asked, "Did you intend to kill Derek Shaw?"
The question seemed to split me open.
"No."
I tried to swallow.
"I wanted him to let me go."
"Why did you stop applying pressure to his neck?"
My eyes filled.
"He threatened a child. Then he reached into his jacket, and I thought he was going to kill me."
"Did you see a weapon?"
"No. Not clearly."
I forced myself to continue.
"I was terrified. I thought if I kept helping him, he'd recover enough to hurt me again."
Torres wrote something.
I waited for her to call me a murderer.
Instead, she said, "We're going to investigate everything, including his injuries, the physical evidence, and the medical findings. I can't promise you what the district attorney will decide."
"I understand."
She closed her notebook.
"But right now, our priority is finding your sister and nephew."
Across the room, Luca was speaking quietly with Daniel.
Neither man looked comfortable.
When Torres approached them, Luca straightened.
"Mr. Valenti, we'll also need information about your financial dealings with Adrian Mercer."
Daniel started to speak.
Luca raised a hand.
"I'll cooperate through counsel."
Torres studied him.
"That's a first."
Luca didn't smile.
"Then perhaps it's overdue."
I watched her expression change.
Not into trust.
Something closer to cautious disbelief.
Then her radio crackled.
A team had located a vehicle matching the one in Caroline's photograph.
Near an abandoned commercial building several blocks from the river.
The pier address had been a diversion.
My heart hammered.
"Are they inside?"
Torres listened.
"We don't know yet."
"Please."
My voice sounded small.
"Please find them."
She looked directly at me.
"We're doing everything we can."
Then she left.
I spent the next hour sitting beside a police officer in Luca's living room, staring at a phone that never seemed to ring.
Daniel had persuaded Luca to remain available for questioning instead of rushing toward the search.
It wasn't easy.
Twice, Luca stood up and reached for his coat.
Twice, he sat down again.
The third time, I touched his hand.
"Don't."
He looked at me.
"If you go there, you'll make it worse."
"I know."
"Then stay."
He sat.
And that small decision felt more significant than any display of power I'd ever seen from him.
At 1:18 a.m., Torres called.
They had found Caroline.
Alive.
I covered my mouth.
"And Noah?"
There was a pause that lasted barely a second but felt like a lifetime.
"He's alive too. Both are being examined by paramedics."
My knees gave way.
Luca caught me before I hit the floor.
I barely heard the rest.
The police had secured the building after surveillance confirmed that the occupants matched the descriptions. Officers had entered during a coordinated operation. Two suspects had been arrested, and another was being sought.
Caroline had been frightened and restrained, but she was conscious.
Noah had stayed close to her.
Mercer was not among the people found inside.
When Torres told me that, I felt Luca's hand tighten around mine.
May you like
Because Mercer was still out there.
And he knew what we'd done.
