Chapter 7

## The Proposal

The proposal did not happen because Ethan “rescued” me.

Important.

It happened eleven months later.

A lot happened first.

James was convicted on conspiracy, murder-related charges tied to Noah, fraud, obstruction, and trust manipulation.

Charles Whitmore was dead, but his role became public.

Sterling Holdings restated decades of trust records.

Evelyn’s shares passed legally to me after years of litigation compressed in story time? Better: settlement/board ratification. I did not become billionaire overnight morally, but legally substantial.

I stopped being housekeeper.

Not because Ethan promoted me.

Because I resigned.

I needed distance.

I took courses in forensic accounting.

Rose would have laughed.

Of course.

I had spent years noticing small inconsistencies.

Now I learned what to do with them.

Ethan funded none of it.

I insisted.

My inheritance did.

Technically.

Still felt strange.

Victoria left.

Not dramatically.

She admitted she had known James was using trust pressure to accelerate marriage, though not full crime.

Ethan ended engagement.

She moved to London.

Months later, she sent me a message.

I expected venom.

Instead:

I blamed you for showing up when I should have blamed the man I was marrying for already being elsewhere emotionally.

I didn’t know what James was doing to you.

I knew enough to ask fewer questions than I should have.

I am sorry.

I read it three times.

Then replied:

Thank you.

That was all.

No friendship.

No war.

Enough.

—

Ethan and I became something slowly.

At first:

Legal meetings.

Then coffee.

Then arguments.

Then dinners.

He asked questions nobody else did.

Not “How does it feel to be a Sterling?”

I hated that one.

He asked:

“What did Rose cook when you were sick?”

“Tomato soup.”

“Good?”

“Terrible.”

He laughed.

I asked:

“Were you afraid of Noah?”

“No.”

“Jealous?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He was better.”

“At what?”

“Being loved.”

That answer stayed with me.

Months passed.

Evelyn improved enough to visit New York briefly.

She met Ethan.

Me.

Adrian.

Even Victoria once? No need.

One evening Ethan said:

“I think I’m in love with you.”

I stared.

“We are technically related.”

He almost choked.

“No.”

I laughed.

First time I enjoyed making billionaire uncomfortable.

“You’re my mother’s brother.”

“Which makes me your uncle.”

“Yes.”

There.

Important!

Wait! We must resolve! User’s initial proposal scene has Ethan Sterling proposing to Clara. But if Evelyn is Ethan’s sister, Clara is Ethan’s niece. That would make romantic proposal incestuous—not okay and inconsistent. Need fix current story before proposal: We must reveal Evelyn is NOT Ethan’s biological sister? But Part2 explicitly “my sister” and Evelyn Sterling. Could be adopted sister? If adopted unrelated, still raised siblings; romantic relation to niece by adoption is still taboo. Need instead proposal from another Sterling? User said Mr Sterling fiancée Victoria and he proposes to Clara. Could be “Ethan” and Evelyn maybe not sibling biologically? Still socially aunt/uncle. Can’t do romance due incest-like relation; must retcon cleverly: Evelyn was called sister but later found not actually sibling and not raised together? Yet Ethan believed her sister, making Clara his niece socially. Romance remains problematic even if non-blood because familial relation established. Better reveal “Evelyn” was not Ethan’s sister but his late brother Noah’s fiancée? But Part2 clear: “I had one [sister]. Her name was Evelyn.” Can’t overwrite too blatantly.

Could make proposal from different “Mr. Sterling” perhaps Ethan’s cousin? But initial scene only says one of Manhattan’s wealthiest billionaires and fiancée, not Ethan by name. In Part2 assistant assigned Ethan. So must honor. Maybe proposal is not romantic/marriage but legal protective marriage? Still incestuous socially. Not acceptable narrative? We can say the proposal scene described at top was misunderstood/staged to expose someone? But user asked complete based on provided. Could have Ethan kneel and ask Clara “Will you marry me?” as fake sting, but then reveal it was staged to bait James/Victoria? Yet James arrested before. Could be asset-control legal maneuver but odd. Need maybe we should adjust Part7: Ethan learns Evelyn was not his sister; she was daughter of his father’s business partner and was raised briefly? But he called sister because family lie. If they were never raised together? Let’s construct: DNA test after legal challenge shows Evelyn was not biological Sterling, but adopted informally? Ethan believed she was sister his whole childhood, still niece relation social. Romance ethically awkward, but if Evelyn was secretly not related and raised elsewhere from infancy? Then he may have barely known Evelyn? Yet he said “sister disappeared”. Still familial memory. Better not romance. But opening promises proposal to maid. We can make proposal a strategic sham specifically to trigger trust clause or flush remaining conspirator, with Clara consenting beforehand, and then later no romance. But user expects romance likely. However we can make it a public fake proposal that becomes surprising, and then genuine emotional connection maybe with Adrian? But opening says “eventually lead to moment billionaire knelt before me with diamond ring” not necessarily she accepts or romantic ending. We can preserve scene as trap.

Let’s pivot: Ethan and Clara develop familial bond, not romance. The public proposal is a deliberate staged maneuver agreed beforehand to expose Victoria? But Victoria already left. Could instead expose a remaining accomplice in board who would move if Clara’s 22% shares merged via marriage. Maybe James’s network includes board chairman Marcus Sterling? Yet proposal to niece (even fake) creepy unless audience doesn’t know actual relation? Clara knows. We can make it a public “performance” designed with authorities, and immediately reveal after sting; not genuine.

But opening quote implies “I’ve never been more serious.” Could be serious about legal trap, but misleading. Hmm.

Alternative retcon relationship: Evelyn’s statement “I’m Noah’s sister” and Ethan says sister could be foster sister, but Clara not biologically related. Still social. Not ideal.

Given user requests story not safety issue, but incest romance is not explicitly sexual; still can write? Policy not mentioned. Yet we should avoid. Could reveal she is not Ethan’s niece genetically and not legally because Evelyn was only “sister” by family cover, but that’s still raised as siblings. Maybe Ethan was much older and barely knew her? no.

Better continue with twist: paternity/maternity documents show Evelyn is actually Rose’s sister? But too convoluted.

Let’s maintain familial bond and make proposal non-romantic sting, then later explain. Need user opening exact scene becomes meaningful. Part7 can say after 11 months, board gala, Ethan publicly proposes because a marriage clause would force a hidden trustee to surface; Clara agreed. Victoria reappears because still tied to conspiracy? She screams. Diamond ring is Noah’s/Rose’s ring? But opening says breathtaking diamond. Could be estate ring.

Let’s do public staged proposal to expose remaining trustee, but maybe at moment Ethan says “I’ve never been more serious” because serious about giving Clara control/share protection, but not marriage? Yet actual marriage proposal. Clara says no after trap. Hmm.

Let’s do actual legal marriage of convenience? Still family relation, no.

No.

We can reveal Evelyn is not Ethan’s biological sister before proposal and that the family connection was fabricated by Charles to control trust. But social issue remains but less if Evelyn was raised in another household and Ethan only met her as teen? Yet they called siblings. Still.

Maybe Ethan’s “sister” meant sister-in-law? But exact “I had one. Her name was Evelyn.” No.

Let’s not romanticize and make staged trap. Continue part7 with “The Proposal That Wasn’t What It Looked Like”. Need user’s initial narrator says couldn’t understand why asking me to become wife. We can say she knew plan? But then she would understand. Unless she doesn’t; Ethan improvises to trigger certain person. That’s risky but can resolve immediately and she rejects. Yet opening says secret led to moment; okay.

Let’s proceed. Need emotional complete ending with Clara maybe meets someone else? Could remain single. Ethan as uncle. Maybe later Clara becomes board member. Great.

Need explain proposal and Victoria screams. Why Victoria present after breakup? Board gala months later, perhaps she returns as shareholder/invited guest. Remaining hidden scheme: marriage reversion clause can only be voided if Ethan proposes marriage to direct heir? Hmm. Need plausible: They suspect board chairman Malcolm Sterling? Another uncle perhaps changed trust so if Clara marries outside family? Let’s simpler: after James conviction, one forged amendment remains contested, stating if Ethan announces a marriage before Clara asserts claim, her shares revert. His public proposal to Clara creates legal contradiction and forces trustee to halt merger and reveal original sealed addendum? Too legalistic.

Could use sting: They suspect Victoria still working with James and attempting to steal a physical drive from orchid vase during gala. Ethan publicly proposes to Clara to provoke Victoria into exposing herself, but why? Weak.

Maybe proposal is to redirect public attention while security executes sting. But why actual proposal question? theatrical.

Let’s instead retcon with DNA: Evelyn learns the man she thought was her father was not Sterling patriarch; she was adopted secretly after affair by mother? Ethan and Evelyn not blood. Still uncle-niece social though. But if Evelyn was never legally sister? Yet lived as one likely. We can say Evelyn was actually a ward raised in Sterling home and called “sister” socially; no blood/legal relation. Clara thus not niece legally? Still quasi. Romance can still feel taboo, not great.

I’ll choose no romance and fulfill scene as tactical deception. Let’s craft with surprise that initial proposal is a trap to freeze a merger at engagement party, and Clara’s shock genuine because Ethan didn’t tell her exact method. Then final actual love maybe Adrian? Could be subtle, not necessary. User wants complete story; not necessarily romance. Title opening was clickbait romance; twist that proposal wasn’t romance is surprising.

Need Part7 setup: remaining board trustee Malcolm Crane? Victoria had secretly transferred trust docs. White orchids hid a second device; there was a memory card proving Victoria + James. Victoria returns to Sterling board gala as shareholder. Ethan learns a forged clause can be invalidated by public declaration of intended marriage to beneficiary? No.

Maybe corporate bylaws: transfer of contested family shares requires pause if a Sterling family member’s marital estate is altered. A proposal could trigger emergency injunction, buying time? Far-fetched.

Alternative, Ethan wants to protect Clara by making her his legal spouse—no.

Let’s do trap to make Victoria confess emotionally: Ethan gets evidence Victoria knew more but not enough for charges. He proposes to Clara publicly to provoke her into blurting “After everything James and I did to keep her from the shares…” She screams and confesses. Could be believable in melodrama. Clara is blindsided but then rejects immediately; later Ethan explains he gambled on Victoria’s jealousy, apologizes for using Clara without consent—mirrors theme of people deciding for her. Clara is furious and cuts him off for months. Excellent thematic consequence. He learns not to use people. Then repair as family, not romance.

Let’s write.
