Chapter 7 - THE LAST BETRAYAL

The south gate was open.
Elena’s room was empty.
Her passport, clothes, and medication were gone.
Only one thing remained.
A letter addressed to Damian.
He read it without speaking.
Then he handed it to me.
My son,
I did not return to save you. I returned to finish what I began.
Your father is alive because I allowed him to live.
There are truths about Noah, Gabriel, and the archive that you still do not know.
Do not follow me.
If you do, Emma and Lila will pay the price.
Damian crushed the edge of the paper.
“She betrayed us.”
Viktor shook his head.
“Elena protected you for eighteen years.”
“She left with him.”
“Perhaps she was taken.”
“The airport footage shows no restraint.”
Gabriel entered with a laptop.
“There is more.”
He played security footage from Lisbon.
Elena walked beside Mikhail voluntarily.
At the private terminal, she turned toward the camera.
Then she signed three words.
Damian did not understand.
I did.
Trust the mother.
Damian looked at me.
“What did she say?”
I told him.
His face hardened.
“My mother has asked for trust before.”
“And she returned alive.”
“After eighteen years.”
Gabriel zoomed in on Elena’s wrist.
A tiny red light blinked beneath her bracelet.
“A tracker,” he said.
Viktor understood first.
“She wants us to follow.”
The signal led to an abandoned estate on the Portuguese coast.
Damian insisted on going.
So did I.
“You are not bringing Lila,” he said.
“She stays with federal protection.”
Lila read his lips.
She crossed her arms.
“No,” I signed firmly. “You cannot come.”
She pointed toward Damian’s chest.
His heart.
Then toward herself.
She had saved him before.
Damian knelt.
“You have already saved me more times than I deserve.”
Lila touched his cheek.
Come back.
He signed the promise properly this time.
I will.
The operation began before dawn.
Gabriel’s agents surrounded the estate. Viktor entered from the cliffs. Damian and I approached through an underground wine cellar.
We found Elena in the main hall.
She stood beside Mikhail.
A gun rested in her hand.
Damian stopped.
“Mother.”
Elena’s eyes filled with pain.
“Put down your weapon.”
He stared at her.
“You chose him.”
“I chose the only path that brought all of us here.”
Mikhail smiled.
“You always were obedient when it mattered.”
Elena turned the gun toward him.
“No,” she said. “I was patient.”
She fired.
The bullet struck Mikhail’s cane.
It shattered on the marble floor.
Inside it was a glass vial connected to a hidden needle.
Gabriel rushed forward.
“What is that?”
Elena stepped back.
“The poison.”
Mikhail’s face twisted.
“You fool.”
She looked at Damian.
“Your father was never poisoned by his council. He poisoned himself.”
Damian frowned.
“Why?”
“To create symptoms that justified secret medical treatments, disappearances, and experiments. He tested transplant drugs on prisoners for decades.”
Gabriel’s voice shook.
“And the hereditary disease?”
“Another lie.”
Mikhail lunged toward the vial.
Viktor tackled him.
They crashed against the staircase.
Mikhail pulled a blade.
Damian intercepted him.
Father and son collided beneath the chandelier.
Mikhail fought with the desperation of a man who believed death was an insult. Damian fought like a man protecting everything behind him.
The blade cut Damian’s side.
I grabbed the broken cane and struck Mikhail’s wrist.
The knife fell.
Elena aimed her weapon.
Mikhail laughed.
“You will not shoot me.”
“Why?”
“Because Damian is not your son.”
The room froze.
Damian stared at him.
Mikhail smiled.
“Elena was pregnant before she married me.”
Damian looked at his mother.
She did not deny it.
“Who?” he whispered.
Elena’s eyes shifted toward Viktor.
The truth became visible before anyone spoke.
Viktor lowered his head.
“I am your father.”
Damian stepped backward.
Every memory rearranged itself.
Viktor’s loyalty.
His protection.
The silver ring.
The way he had looked at Damian with pride and pain.
Mikhail seized the fallen knife.
He charged toward Elena.
Damian moved.
Viktor moved faster.
The blade entered Viktor’s chest.
He gasped.
Damian caught him as he fell.
Federal agents surrounded Mikhail and forced him to the floor.
But Damian saw none of it.
He held Viktor in his arms.
“You should have told me.”
Viktor struggled to breathe.
“I wanted to.”
“You let me believe I was his.”
“You were never his.”
Viktor touched Damian’s face.
“You were always better.”
His hand fell.
Damian’s cry tore through the hall.
May you like
It was not the roar of a mafia boss.
It was the sound of a son losing his father seconds after finding him.
