Chapter 5 - THE FORTUNE BUILT ON A LIE

I stared at Grace.

“Me?”

She nodded.

“The twins triggered the trust, but you are the beneficiary.”

Elias placed the papers on the table.

“Explain everything.”

Grace laughed bitterly.

“You sound just like Father.”

“Grace.”

“No. You don’t get to order me anymore.”

His expression softened.

“I thought you were d/e/@/d.”

Her anger disappeared.

For a moment, she was not the mysterious woman who had taken my daughters.

She was a younger sister looking at the brother who had mourned her.

“I know.”

Elias stepped forward.

Grace backed away.

He stopped immediately.

“I looked for you.”

“I know.”

“For years.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you contact me?”

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“Because every person who helped me disappeared.”

Silence.

Elias looked shattered.

Grace wiped her face quickly.

“Father found me after the @tt/@ck. He told me Caruso had ordered it. I believed him.”

“And then?”

“Years later, I learned Father had signed the order himself.”

Elias stared at the documents.

“Why?”

“Because I discovered where the Vance fortune actually came from.”

I held Emma tighter.

Grace walked to the windows.

“Our grandfather built legitimate shipping companies. Father expanded them through smuggling, bribery, intimidation, and other cr/i/me. Caruso helped him hide the money.”

Rose had followed us into the warehouse and now stood near the entrance.

Grace looked at her.

“Rose discovered it too.”

Rose nodded.

“So Grandfather created the trust,” Grace continued. “He wanted the legitimate assets separated from everything corrupted.”

“And Ava inherited them?” Elias asked.

“Yes.”

“Why Ava?”

Grace faced me.

“Because Grandfather trusted Rose more than his own son.”

Rose closed her eyes.

“He believed my future children should inherit what remained clean.”

My mind spun.

“But you said I’m not Rose’s daughter.”

Grace smiled sadly.

“That was another lie.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

Rose stepped toward me.

“Ava—”

“No.”

I backed away.

“No more half-truths.”

She stopped.

“Tell me who my mother is.”

“I am.”

“But in the church—”

“I lied because Elias’s father was listening.”

She looked toward the door.

“He believed you were his daughter. I needed him to continue believing that.”

“Why would he think that?”

Rose’s face tightened.

“Because years ago, he tried to force me into marrying a man who would keep the inheritance inside his control. I fled while pregnant.”

“Pregnant with me?”

“Yes.”

“And my father?”

“A schoolteacher named Thomas Bennett.”

The name meant nothing to me.

“What happened to him?”

Rose looked down.

“He d/i/ed in a car crash before you were born.”

I closed my eyes.

One more person stolen from my life.

“Was it really an accident?”

Rose hesitated.

“No.”

The answer was quiet.

“Your uncle arranged it.”

My knees nearly gave way.

Elias looked sick.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

I stared at Elias.

He looked as horrified as I felt.

Then the warehouse doors suddenly slammed shut.

Grace spun around.

Elias reached beneath his coat.

A voice echoed from above.

“Family reunions are always exhausting.”

Daniel.

He stood on the metal balcony overlooking us.

Victor Caruso appeared beside him.

Older.

Heavyset.

Perfectly dressed.

And smiling.

My entire body went cold.

Daniel looked down at me.

“You always were difficult, Ava.”

I held the babies tighter.

“You abandoned us.”

“I needed you desperate.”

“Why?”

“So Vance would rescue you.”

I froze.

Elias looked at Daniel.

“You arranged the route change.”

“Yes.”

The road closure.

The overpass.

Everything.

“You wanted me to find her,” Elias said.

Daniel smiled.

“We needed Ava inside the Vance family.”

“Why?”

Victor Caruso answered.

“Because she was the only person who could legally destroy Elias.”

I looked at Elias.

“What does he mean?”

Caruso descended the stairs slowly.

“The legitimate companies are controlled by your trust. Elias’s organization depends upon those companies for warehouses, transportation, property, banking relationships.”

He pointed toward me.

“With one signature, you could take almost everything from him.”

My stomach turned.

Daniel had not thrown me away because he hated daughters.

He had thrown me beneath an overpass because he wanted Elias Vance to rescue me.

He knew Elias would investigate.

He knew the Vance family mystery would surface.

And he knew I might eventually gain control.

“You used my babies as bait.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“They were necessary.”

Something inside me became calm.

Dangerously calm.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“They were innocent.”

He shrugged.

“That’s the same thing.”

Elias moved.

Caruso’s men raised their g/u/ns.

Grace stepped in front of me.

“Don’t.”

Daniel descended the final stair.

“Here is what happens now, Ava. You sign the controlling shares to Victor. Elias walks away alive. Your daughters remain safe.”

“And if I refuse?”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“You won’t.”

I looked around.

Caruso’s men surrounded us.

Rose was trembling.

Grace looked ready to fight.

Elias stood completely still.

Then I noticed something.

He was smiling.

Caruso noticed too.

“What?”

Elias glanced at his watch.

“You talk too much.”

A siren wailed outside.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Caruso’s face changed.

Police vehicles flooded the pier.

Daniel spun toward Elias.

“You called them?”

“No.”

Grace smiled.

“I did.”

The warehouse erupted into chaos.

Men ran.

Orders were shouted.

Caruso tried to escape through a side door.

Police entered from both sides.

Within minutes, the room was filled with officers.

Daniel stood frozen beside me.

I looked directly at him as an officer pulled his hands behind his back.

He leaned close.

“You think this is over?”

I said nothing.

He smiled.

“Ask Elias why he never married.”

Then he was taken away.

I looked at Elias.

May you like

His expression changed.

And suddenly I knew Daniel had managed to leave one more secret behind.
