Chapter 1

I walked into my own mansion expecting my wife to run into my arms, but instead I found my family celebrating my money while the woman I loved was missing. They thought they had fooled me for years, treating my wife like a servant behind closed doors, but they had no idea I had just uncovered the lie that would destroy everything they had built.
After five straight years of expanding my restaurant empire and investing in luxury real estate overseas, I finally landed back in America. I didn't tell a single person I was coming home because I wanted to surprise everyone.
Especially my wife, Emma.
She had stood beside me when I had nothing but impossible dreams and unpaid bills. Long before the money, the mansions, and the headlines, she believed in me, and I promised that one day I'd give her the life she deserved.
I even trusted my own family to help manage everything while I traveled.
My mother, Margaret, insisted Emma was too trusting with money. My sister, Jennifer, agreed, saying she could easily be manipulated by dishonest people.
I believed them.
Looking back, that was the biggest mistake of my life.
As my driver pulled through the gates of my mansion outside Dallas, Texas, I couldn't stop smiling. I held a small velvet box containing a diamond necklace, already imagining Emma's face when I surprised her.
"We're finally done with the distance," I whispered to myself.
The property looked even more beautiful than I remembered.
Fresh landscaping.
Luxury vehicles filled the driveway, including a brand-new SUV and a bright red sports car.
I assumed my younger brother, Michael, had purchased them with the generous monthly allowance I sent home.
Then I heard music.
Loud music.
It sounded like a celebration.
I smiled, thinking maybe fate had given me the perfect entrance.
The new security guard hesitated when I approached the front door until he checked my identification. The color drained from his face, and he immediately stepped aside without saying another word.
The moment I opened the front door, I froze.
Champagne flowed freely.
Crystal chandeliers sparkled above an enormous dining table overflowing with expensive steaks, lobster, seafood towers, imported wine, and desserts that looked worthy of a luxury resort.
My mother glittered beneath layers of gold jewelry.
Jennifer and her husband wore designer clothes that probably cost more than most people earned in a month.
Michael stood in the middle of the room raising another glass.
Then I heard the sentence that made my stomach drop.
"Here's another toast to my brother's wire transfers!" he shouted.
The room erupted with laughter.
Hidden behind a large decorative plant near the entrance, I watched without anyone noticing I had arrived.
Only one face mattered.
Emma.
She wasn't sitting beside my family.
She wasn't greeting guests.
She wasn't anywhere.
I searched the living room.
Nothing.
I rushed upstairs and threw open the door to our bedroom.
Empty.
My pulse quickened as I searched every hallway before hurrying back downstairs toward the kitchen.
Still nothing.
Only caterers carried trays back and forth as if everything were perfectly normal.
I stopped one of the servers.
"Excuse me," I asked as calmly as I could. "Where's Mrs. Emma?"
The young waiter answered without hesitation.
"Oh... Emma?" he said casually. "I think she's out back near the outdoor kitchen. Ms. Jennifer had her washing all the pots a little while ago."
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Had her.
Washing pots.
My legs moved before my mind caught up.
I pushed through the back hallway and hurried toward the service area behind the mansion.
The laughter from the party faded behind me.
Smoke filled the air.
Steam rolled from industrial sinks.
Then I saw her.
Emma wasn't dressed for a celebration.
She wasn't wearing the diamond earrings I'd bought her before I left.
She stood over enormous greasy pots with raw, red hands, sweat running down her face, her hair tied back as though she worked for strangers instead of living in the house I built for us.
Standing only a few feet away was Jennifer.
She wasn't helping.
She was giving orders.
Watching Emma scrub another pot as if my wife belonged to her.
In that single moment, every lie my family had fed me over the past five years shattered into pieces.
They hadn't been protecting Emma.
They had been using her.
May you like
They had turned my home into their palace while forcing the woman I loved to live like hired help.
And as I stared at the scene in absolute disbelief, they still had no idea I was standing right behind them.
