Chapter 1

My mother and sister beat my wife, dragged her barefoot into the snow, and left her to freeze because she refused to surrender my father’s estate. They believed they were bullying a defenseless woman out of a mansion—but before sunrise, they would discover that her quiet husband was the faceless crime lord feared across three continents.

The roses slipped from my hand when I saw Claire lying beside the iron gates.

Snow clung to her dark hair. She wore only jeans and a thin sweater, and angry bruises circled her wrists like fingerprints. Her lips had already begun turning blue.

I dropped to my knees and gathered her into my arms.

“Claire, open your eyes. Please.”

Her lashes trembled.

“They tried to make me sign,” she whispered. “I said no.”

Through the mansion’s glowing windows, I could see my mother and younger sister, Natalie, sitting beneath the chandelier. They were drinking my father’s wine and laughing as though they had not just abandoned my wife to die.

I carried Claire to my armored SUV, wrapped her in my coat, and turned the heat to its highest setting. Only after her breathing steadied did I return to the house.

Mother opened the door wearing my late father’s favorite silk robe.

“Ethan?” The color vanished from her face. “You weren’t supposed to be home tonight.”

Natalie appeared behind her, holding one of Father’s crystal glasses.

“Claire became hysterical,” she said. “She attacked us, then ran outside.”

I looked beyond them.

My father’s silverware covered the dining table. A rare bottle from my locked cellar sat open beside my chair. Near Mother’s plate were property-transfer documents and the shattered remains of Claire’s pen.

“What did you do to my wife?” I asked.

Mother’s expression hardened.

“She refused to sign over the estate. We simply reminded her that she married into this family. Someone had to teach her where she belongs.”

For two years, they had known me as Ethan Cole—a mild-mannered investor who traveled constantly, spoke softly, and avoided confrontation.

They had no idea that armed men lowered their voices when I entered a room.

In another world, they called me the Ghost King.

No government possessed my photograph. No rival knew my real name. Entire criminal networks disappeared when I gave a single order.

Claire was the only person who knew the truth.

I returned to the SUV and made two calls.

The first was to the police.

The second was to Viktor, the man who commanded my organization whenever I was away.

“Boss,” he answered immediately.

“Activate the Black Ledger,” I said. “Freeze every account connected to my mother and sister. Lock down the estate. Recover every security recording. Bring my attorney.”

Silence filled the line.

“Do they know who you are?”

Through the window, Mother and Natalie were hurriedly gathering the documents, still convinced the mansion would soon belong to them.

“Not yet.”

What they did not know was that my father had placed the entire estate in an irrevocable trust before his death.

Claire was the sole beneficiary.

I was the sole trustee.

And before sunrise, the women who had left my wife to freeze would lose their fortune, their freedom, and the family name they believed could protect them.
