Chapter 1

My mother-in-law pressed a pillow over my face while I lay trapped inside a full-body cast, whispering that I should have died in my "accident." She thought I couldn't move, couldn't fight back, and couldn't prove a thing. What she didn't know was that I had spent the last forty-eight hours waiting for her to say those exact words.

Three days earlier, everyone told me I was lucky to be alive.

The doctors called it a terrible fall.

My husband called it an accident.

The police closed the report before I even woke up.

Only I knew someone had shoved me off that second-floor balcony.

My name is Claire Morgan.

I had been married to Ethan for just eighteen months.

To the outside world, he was the perfect husband—successful, charming, generous.

At home...

He always let his mother make every decision.

Margaret never pretended to like me.

She called me an opportunist.

A mistake.

What I didn't know was that her hatred wasn't just about control. It was about survival. And my death was the only key to unlocking a multi-million dollar secret she desperately needed to protect.

The night I confronted Ethan after finding messages from another woman, he smiled as though I'd accused him of forgetting to buy milk.

I didn't realize then that those messages weren't a careless mistake—they were the bait in a meticulously designed trap.

Then everything happened so fast.

A shadow stepping out.

A violent shove.

The pavement rushing toward me.

And the terrifying silhouette of my husband standing safely behind the glass doors, watching me fall without lifting a finger to help.

When I woke up, nearly every bone in my body seemed to belong to someone else.

The doctors wrapped me in a rigid body cast to keep my spine from collapsing.

I couldn't sit up.

I couldn't turn over.

I couldn't even lift my arms without help.

Everyone pitied me.

Except Margaret.

She never missed a visiting hour.

Every afternoon she sat beside my bed pretending to pray.

Every evening she whispered things no grieving mother-in-law would ever say.

"You're harder to get rid of than I expected."

No one else ever heard.

Two days later, after the nurses finished their rounds, she quietly locked my hospital room door.

She walked to my bedside.

Smiled.

Then picked up the pillow beside my head.

"You should've died on that sidewalk," she whispered, pressing the pillow over my face.

"My son deserves another chance."

I couldn't scream.

I couldn't move.

I simply counted.

One...

Two...

Three...

At ten, I pressed the tiny emergency switch hidden inside the brace around my thumb.

The alarm wasn't connected to the nurses.

Forty-eight hours earlier, Detective Mason had asked me only one question.

"Do you believe she'll come back to finish the job?"

I answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

The door burst open.

Detectives rushed inside.

Margaret froze with both hands still gripping the pillow.

One detective calmly placed her in handcuffs.

Another collected the pillow without saying a word.

I finally thought it was over.

I thought the darkest chapter of my life had just ended, and the truth was finally out.

Then Detective Mason looked at me with an expression I'd never seen before.

"Mrs. Morgan..."

He hesitated.

"There's something you deserve to know before we bring your husband in."

He placed a worn manila folder on my hospital bed.

Across the front, someone had written one name in faded black ink.

Emily Morgan.

I frowned.

"I don't know anyone named Emily."

The detective slowly met my eyes.

"You don't."

He took a slow breath.

"But she was married to Ethan... before you."

The room fell silent.

Then he quietly slid a photograph from the folder.

A smiling young woman.

May you like

Standing on the very same balcony where I had almost died.

"And she's the reason," the detective whispered, "that we finally know what is hidden inside the walls of your house."
