Chapter 9

Later that night, after everyone had left and the children were asleep, I walked through the quiet house.

I stopped outside Sophie’s door.

Three years earlier, Grace had slept on that hallway floor because she did not know who else would listen.

Now the door stood half open.

Sophie was asleep beneath a mountain of blankets.

Across the hall, Caleb had one arm wrapped around Mr. Buttons.

I thought about Claire.

About the letter.

About blue thread.

Claire had understood something long before I did.

Protection was not the same as control.

Providing was not the same as being present.

And strength was not measured by how many people feared disappointing you.

Sometimes the strongest thing a parent could build was a home where a child knew they were allowed to speak.

Even when what they had to say was uncomfortable.

Especially then.

I returned downstairs.

Sophie’s picture was already sitting on my desk.

The first drawing showed a father inside a phone.

The second showed him standing beside his children.

I switched off the lamp.

Then I noticed something on the frame.

A piece of blue thread tied around the corner.

I smiled.

Some things are repaired because they are broken.

Other things are repaired because someone plans to keep them.

For most of my life, I had believed keeping people safe meant making myself powerful enough that nothing could reach them.

I had been wrong.

Sometimes keeping a family meant staying close enough to notice when something already had.

And from then on, whenever Sophie said, “Daddy, can I tell you something?”

May you like

I gave her the answer Claire had spent years trying to teach me.

“Always.”
