Part 9

Claire did not remain my maid.

Technically.

When I offered her a different position, she refused.

“What position?” she asked.

“I haven’t invented the title yet.”

“That seems promising.”

“You could run the foundation’s clinic program.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I don’t want to run anything.”

“Everyone wants to run something.”

“I spent nine years running toward emergencies. I’m trying to stop.”

That was the first time she came close to explaining why she left nursing.

We were standing in the greenhouse.

Ava’s mint had survived.

The brownies had not.

Claire touched one of the leaves.

“I was very good at being useful when things were terrible,” she said.

I waited.

“I became less good at knowing who I was when nobody needed saving.”

I understood that more than she realized.

“So what do you want?”

She smiled slightly.

“Apparently I want to fold expensive towels and argue with a six-year-old about socks.”

“Seven next month.”

“I know.”

“Of course you do.”

She stayed.

But the arrangement changed.

She worked fewer hours.

She enrolled in a community health program.

Two afternoons a week, she helped rebuild the Lakeview clinic partnership.

And I stopped pretending I barely noticed her.

Some truths did not need immediate definitions.

May you like

Trust was enough.

For now.
