Chapter 9 - THE LAST LETTER

One year after my release, a package arrived.

No return address.

Inside was the final unopened letter my grandfather had written.

Daniel found it behind the lining of Box 317 after federal investigators removed the files.

I almost burned it.

Instead, I read it.

Evelyn,

If you are reading this, then my secrets have outlived my ability to defend them.

That may be justice.

I have spent much of my life confusing protection with control.

There is a difference.

Protection leaves another person with choices.

Control removes them and calls the theft love.

I did terrible things believing I could arrange better outcomes than the people affected by them.

I stole money and called it business.

I stole a child and called it mercy.

I stole truth from two daughters and called it family.

Do not forgive me because I was your grandfather.

Do not hate yourself because my sins paid for your life.

Return what can be returned.

Tell what can be told.

And where neither is possible, refuse to continue the lie.

There is one thing I hope you understand.

The trust was never meant to make you rich.

It was meant to make sure that someday, somebody better than me would finish what I was too cowardly to finish myself.

I hope that somebody is you.

Thomas Lane.

I read the letter twice.

Then took it to my mother’s fireplace.

Margaret stood beside me.

Victoria on the other side.

I held the paper over the flame.

Neither stopped me.

The edges darkened.

Curled.

Disappeared.

When it was gone, Victoria asked:

“Feel better?”

“No.”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“Good.”

I looked at her.

She shrugged.

“Big dramatic gestures rarely work as advertised.”

I laughed.

May you like

Victoria did too.

For one strange second, they sounded exactly alike.
