PART 1: The Photo That Changed the Room

Under the table, the little girl held her breath.

Her red hoodie was pulled tight around her small body, her dirty fingers gripping the sleeves so hard they shook. Behind the older man’s boots, she tried to make herself invisible.

Above her, the man in the worn leather jacket sat still.

Too still.

Across from him, the younger man in the white shirt leaned forward, his polite smile already cracking.

“A girl ran in here. Where is she?”

The older man didn’t blink.

He spoke softly, almost like they were discussing the weather.

“Why would she run from you?”

The younger man’s jaw tightened.

His eyes flicked toward the locals watching from the bar.

“This is family business.”

Under the table, the girl squeezed her eyes shut.

Her breathing trembled.

The older man slowly lowered one hand beside the table, palm open, silently telling her not to move.

Then he looked back at the younger man.

“Not anymore.”

The room went still.

A glass stopped clinking.

The neon sign buzzed louder in the silence.

The younger man realized no one in that bar was looking away.

The girl opened her eyes and looked up at the old man with frightened trust.

And then, from her pocket, a small photo slipped onto the tiled floor.

The old man saw the woman in it.

His face changed.

Because he knew her.
