Chapter 9 - THE LAST MOVE VANESSA MADEThe final threat came three months later.

Vanessa had been formally charged in connection with the financial scheme, and the investigation into Salazar's business dealings continued.
She had lost her access to my companies, her engagement, and the social position she had expected to gain through marriage.
But she had not accepted the consequences.
One afternoon, my attorney called.
“Adrian, Vanessa's legal team has submitted a statement alleging that Grace used her position in your household to manipulate your son and secure a personal relationship with you.”
I closed my eyes.
“What evidence?”
“None that supports the central allegations. But they are requesting access to certain private records.”
“Then respond through the legal process.”
“There's another issue.”
I waited.
“Vanessa has also contacted several media outlets.”
I looked through the glass wall of my office.
Across the courtyard, Grace was helping Noah plant flowers in the garden.
“What is she claiming?”
“That you ended the engagement because Grace threatened to leave with your son.”
I felt cold anger settle in my chest.
“Did Grace ever threaten that?”
“No.”
“Then we will prove it.”
My attorney paused.
“Adrian, I should caution you against responding emotionally.”
“I have no intention of doing that.”
I ended the call and walked into the garden.
Grace looked up when she saw my face.
“What happened?”
I told her everything.
She listened quietly.
Then she looked at Noah, who was carefully patting soil around a small flower.
“She's trying to make me look like someone who wants to take him away from you.”
“Yes.”
Grace's eyes filled.
“I would never do that.”
“I know.”
“What if people believe her?”
I took her hand.
“Then we tell the truth.”
“What if it becomes public?”
“Then we protect Noah's privacy and let the evidence speak for itself.”
She searched my face.
“You aren't going to use your influence to destroy her?”
“No.”
“Even after everything she did?”
I shook my head.
“I will hold her accountable. I will not become the person she wants everyone to believe I am.”
Grace looked at me for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
The next several weeks were difficult.
The legal team documented the false allegations and submitted evidence concerning Vanessa's communications with Salazar.
The court rejected the request for private records that were not relevant to the proceedings.
The investigators continued examining the financial arrangements.
I refused to discuss Noah publicly.
I refused to use his name to win a public argument.
And I refused to let the story become a spectacle at his expense.
Eventually, Vanessa's legal team withdrew several of the claims after the supporting evidence failed to materialize.
Her involvement in the financial scheme became the focus of the proceedings.
Salazar was also investigated, and the companies involved faced the consequences of their actions.
The legal process took time.
It was not as satisfying as revenge would have been.
It was more important.
Because my son needed to learn that wrongdoing had consequences without learning that the only acceptable response to pain was cruelty.
One evening, after the latest hearing, I found Grace sitting beside Claire's garden memorial.
She was holding the gray elephant.
I sat beside her.
“Are you all right?”
She nodded.
“I was thinking about Claire.”
I waited.
“I used to be afraid that loving Noah so much would somehow take something away from her.”
I looked at the little stone engraved with Claire's name.
“What do you think now?”
Grace smiled sadly.
“I think she gave him more love than one person could ever have delivered alone.”
My throat tightened.
“She gave him you,” I whispered.
Grace took my hand.
“And she gave him you.”
We sat together until the sun disappeared beyond the water.
For the first time, I did not feel that Claire's memory stood between us.
May you like
It stood beside us.
And that made all the difference.
