Chapter 1

Twenty-six years after I abandoned the only woman I ever truly loved, I found her walking down a dusty Texas road with a mattress on her back and a three-year-old girl beside her. Mabel told me I was too late to save either of them, but when I saw the child’s unmistakable green eyes, I realized my own family had destroyed Mabel while hiding a secret that could change my life forever.

My name is Damian Vance.

At forty-four, I had enough money to buy almost anything.

That afternoon, none of it prepared me for seeing Mabel Sterling again.

I was driving toward a ranch acquisition when I spotted a woman struggling beneath a secondhand mattress.

A little girl walked beside her carrying grocery bags.

Then the woman turned.

Mabel.

My first love.

I had left town at eighteen promising I would return for her.

I never did.

I watched her disappear into a crumbling cottage with a patched roof and blue tarp covering one wall.

The next morning, I started asking questions.

What I learned made me sick.

Four years earlier, nearly $200,000 had vanished from my family’s business. My relatives blamed Mabel, who had been their accountant.

There was no money found in her possession.

No clear digital trail.

But the Vance name carried power.

Mabel had none.

She lost her career, her reputation, and nearly everything else.

Two days later, I stood on her porch.

When she opened the door, recognition slowly crossed her face.

“Damian?”

“Mabel.”

Her shock turned cold.

“Did you come to see what happened to the girl you promised to come back for?”

Before I could answer, a child appeared behind her.

The same little girl from the road.

She wrapped her arms around Mabel’s leg and looked up at me.

My heart stopped.

Green eyes.

Not ordinary green.

The exact clear shade my mother had possessed.

“Mabel,” I whispered. “How old is she?”

Her face went white.

“Leave.”

“I need to know.”

“You needed to know a lot of things twenty-six years ago.”

She pulled the girl closer.

Then memory hit me.

Four years earlier, I had returned for my uncle’s funeral.

One rainy night, I found Mabel in an old roadside tavern.

We talked for hours.

About everything we’d lost.

About everything we still remembered.

And that night, after twenty-two years apart, we ended up together.

By morning, I panicked.

I returned to Houston without even leaving a note.

Now Mabel’s daughter was three.

My daughter?

“Mabel...”

She looked at me with tears burning behind years of anger.

“You’re too late, Damian.”

The door slammed.

I stood there unable to move.

Suddenly, the missing money, my family’s accusations, Mabel’s ruined life, and that little girl’s eyes no longer felt like separate pieces.

Someone in my family had destroyed Mabel.

And I was beginning to suspect exactly why they needed me to believe she was a thief.
