Chapter 5 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE FIFTH CHILD’S KEY

By dawn, St. Gabriel Hospital was crawling with federal agents.

Vittorio sat inside an armored vehicle, wrists restrained, still wearing the faint expression of a man who believed the board remained his.

Alejandro stood outside with Sofia and Isabella.

The four boys had been brought safely from the church.

For the first time, all five children stood together.

Mateo stared at Isabella.

“You’re our sister?”

She nodded.

Nicolas frowned.

“You’re not identical.”

Isabella rolled her eyes.

“I’m a girl.”

Rafael whispered,

“She’s bossy.”

Isabella heard him.

“I heard that.”

Alejandro looked at Sofia.

She was laughing.

Not politely.

Not cautiously.

Really laughing.

The sound nearly destroyed him.

Five years had been stolen from them.

Yet somehow the sight of their children arguing made the lost years feel less powerful.

Luca approached.

“Agents found the vault.”

Alejandro looked toward the hospital.

“Under the chapel?”

“Exactly where you guessed.”

Sofia’s smile vanished.

“Vittorio said Isabella’s key opens it.”

Alejandro looked down.

The brass key was still in Isabella’s hand.

“I don’t want her going underground again.”

Sofia nodded.

“Neither do I.”

Alejandro held out his hand.

“Can Papa borrow it?”

Isabella studied him.

“You’ll bring it back?”

“Yes.”

“You promise?”

Alejandro crouched.

“I promise.”

She placed it in his palm.

Then whispered,

“Grandpa lies.”

“I know.”

“He says sometimes the truth is worse.”

Alejandro paused.

“Did he tell you what’s inside?”

She shook her head.

“Only that Mama would cry.”

Sofia heard.

Her face tightened.

They entered the hospital together.

The vault door sat beneath the old chapel.

It was smaller than Alejandro expected.

No gold.

No stacks of cash.

Only boxes.

Hundreds.

Each labeled with names and dates.

Luca opened the first.

Medical records.

The second contained photographs.

The third contained surveillance tapes.

Sofia moved toward a box labeled S. MORETTI.

Her hands trembled.

Alejandro opened it.

Inside were files dating back seven years.

Photos of Sofia leaving restaurants.

Doctor visits.

Phone logs.

Pregnancy records.

Someone had monitored her long before she ever suspected Vittorio.

At the bottom lay a sealed envelope.

ALEJANDRO.

He opened it.

Inside was a laboratory report.

He read the first page.

Then stopped.

Sofia noticed.

“What?”

He did not answer.

“Alejandro.”

He handed it to her.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Confusion.

Then disbelief.

“No.”

Luca took the file.

“What is it?”

The report concerned Sofia.

Genetic testing.

Her parents.

Her sister.

Then one phrase.

PATERNAL MATCH.

VITTORIO MORETTI.

Silence.

Sofia stared at Alejandro.

“No.”

Camila entered behind them.

“What happened?”

Luca handed her the report.

Camila’s face drained.

“This says—”

“I know what it says,” Sofia whispered.

Alejandro felt sick.

Vittorio Moretti was listed as Sofia’s biological father.

Which would mean—

“No,” Alejandro said immediately.

Sofia turned toward him.

“The test is false.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he wanted us to find it.”

Luca nodded slowly.

“Another manipulation.”

Camila opened more boxes.

“Maybe.”

Then she stopped.

“What?”

“There are original samples.”

Alejandro turned.

Camila held up sealed medical vials.

Dates.

Signatures.

Chain-of-custody paperwork.

Sofia backed away.

“No.”

Alejandro caught her.

“Look at me.”

She shook her head.

“If he’s my father—”

“He isn’t.”

“You don’t know.”

“I do.”

“How?”

“Because Vittorio wanted me to believe I had married my own sister.”

The room went silent.

Alejandro continued.

“He would enjoy that kind of cruelty.”

Luca looked around.

“So what is the real reason?”

They searched.

Twenty minutes later, Marco found another folder.

This one labeled:

PROJECT ISABELLA.

Inside were infant medical reports.

Vittorio had ordered testing on all five children.

Mateo.

Nicolas.

Tomas.

Rafael.

Isabella.

The boys’ reports were ordinary.

Isabella’s was different.

A rare hereditary blood marker.

Camila read aloud.

“This marker can identify descendants through the maternal line.”

Sofia stared.

“What does that mean?”

A federal medical consultant stepped closer.

“It means Isabella inherited something from your mother’s side.”

“My mother?”

The consultant nodded.

“Not Vittorio.”

Alejandro looked at the fake paternity report.

“Then why create this?”

“To hide another relationship.”

Sofia’s eyes widened.

“What relationship?”

They searched again.

Finally Luca found an old photograph.

Vittorio as a young man.

Standing beside Sofia’s mother.

And another man.

On the back:

CHICAGO, 1982.

Sofia stared.

“My mother knew Vittorio.”

Camila pointed to the third man.

“Who is that?”

Marco recognized him.

“Judge Emilio Caruso.”

Alejandro knew the name.

One of Chicago’s most respected retired federal judges.

A man famous for dismantling organized criminal networks in the 1990s.

Sofia turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting.

ELENA, EMILIO, VITTORIO.

She whispered,

“My mother’s name was Elena Caruso before she married.”

Luca frowned.

“Caruso?”

Sofia nodded.

“Judge Caruso was her older brother.”

Alejandro looked at the boxes.

Suddenly the shape became clearer.

Vittorio had not been Sofia’s father.

He had been watching her family.

Why?

A small recording device sat at the bottom of the box.

Alejandro pressed play.

Vittorio’s younger voice filled the vault.

“If Elena has a child, that child carries the account marker.”

Another voice asked,

“What marker?”

“The Caruso marker.”

“For what?”

“For the trust.”

Sofia stared at Alejandro.

The recording continued.

“Emilio hid the evidence inside a generational trust. Only a direct biological descendant of Elena Caruso can legally unlock it.”

“What evidence?”

“Everything.”

Vittorio’s voice lowered.

“Politicians. Judges. Financial transfers. Names from forty years of operations.”

A second voice whistled.

“So Sofia can access it?”

“Yes.”

“And her children?”

Vittorio laughed.

“Only the daughter.”

The recording ended.

Everyone stared at Isabella’s file.

Alejandro finally understood.

Vittorio had not taken Isabella because she was his granddaughter.

He had taken her because she was a key.

Literally and legally.

A descendant through Sofia’s maternal line.

Someone who could access a trust established decades earlier.

Luca whispered,

“Vittorio needed Isabella alive.”

Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.

“He raised her for five years because he planned to use her.”

Camila looked around.

“Then the trust still exists.”

Marco searched the documents.

“Here.”

An address.

First Continental Trust.

Chicago.

Alejandro looked at Sofia.

“We go there.”

Sofia shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“For once, we stop reacting.”

She placed both hands on the table.

“Vittorio wants us to unlock something.”

Alejandro nodded.

“So?”

“So we ask why.”

Luca smiled faintly.

“There’s my sister-in-law.”

They studied the records for another hour.

Eventually Camila found what Vittorio had hidden beneath three layers of forged documents.

The trust did not contain money.

It contained sealed testimony.

Statements from judges.

Bankers.

Police officials.

Business leaders.

Evidence capable of destroying not only Vittorio’s network but dozens of others.

Alejandro slowly sat down.

“He wasn’t protecting his empire.”

Marco understood.

“He was protecting everyone attached to it.”

Sofia looked at Isabella’s medical file.

“And he needed her because only she could unlock the original archive.”

Alejandro’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Vittorio.

Despite being in federal custody.

“You found it.”

Alejandro looked toward the agents.

“How are you calling?”

“Old men have resources.”

“What do you want?”

“You already know.”

“No.”

Vittorio chuckled.

“You still think the archive destroys me.”

“It does.”

“No, son.”

His voice became softer.

“It destroys you.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

“Your name appears more than mine.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it?”

Vittorio continued.

“Every account opened while you were young. Every shell company signed in your name before you controlled the organization. Every operation I ran after my disappearance was attributed to Alejandro Moretti.”

Luca heard enough to understand.

“He framed you.”

Vittorio laughed through the phone.

“I made him.”

Alejandro’s grip tightened.

“You built a second empire using my identity.”

“Yes.”

“If Isabella opens the trust, every federal agency in the country sees documents saying I ran it.”

“Yes.”

“You want me to destroy the archive.”

“No.”

Vittorio paused.

“I want you to choose.”

“Between what?”

“Your freedom and the truth.”

Then the line went d/e/@/d.

Sofia looked at Alejandro.

“What are you going to do?”

He stared at the files.

For twenty years, Alejandro Moretti had protected his name.

His organization.

His power.

Now all of it seemed pathetic beside five children waiting upstairs.

He looked toward the ceiling.

May you like

Then smiled.

“I’m going to make my father regret teaching me how to play chess.”
