Chapter 9 - [THE KING RETURNS]

Answer one: Luca wasn't dead. He had realized the Cartel trap at the docks was a distraction and returned to the estate just in time.
Open two: How did Luca survive the ambush? And how do we stop Vanessa for good?
Luca didn't say a word. He raised his rifle and fired two precise, suppressed shots.
The mercenaries flanking Vanessa dropped to the floor, instantly neutralized.
Vanessa screamed, spinning around. She raised her pistol, but Luca was faster. He stepped forward and kicked the gun out of her hand. It clattered against the steel wall.
"You told me the docks were secure!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away in terror.
"They were," Luca said, his voice cold and commanding. "By the Commission. I didn't go to the Cartel ambush, Vanessa. I went to the Five Families. They don't take kindly to a Cartel trying to steal Chicago."
He grabbed Vanessa by the collar of her designer coat, dragging her out of the bunker. "Your men outside are already dead or surrendered. It's over."
I scrambled up, helping my mother and Sofia to their feet.
When we emerged from the bunker, the mansion was filled with Luca’s men. The Cartel threat had been entirely dismantled in less than an hour.
Luca threw Vanessa to the floor at the feet of Arthur, who was now heavily restrained.
"Take her to the Commission," Luca ordered his underboss. "Let them make an example of her."
Vanessa didn't fight anymore. As they dragged her away, she looked broken, her empire of lies completely shattered.
The nightmare was finally over.
A week later, the estate had been repaired. The broken glass was replaced, the blood was washed away.
It was a bright, sunny Sunday morning.
I stood in the gardens, watching my mother sit on a wrought-iron bench, laughing as Mateo showed her a drawing he had made. She had color in her cheeks again. Luca’s private doctors had adjusted her treatment, and the prognosis was finally hopeful.
Sofia walked out onto the patio, carrying a tray of lemonade. She looked at peace, no longer looking over her shoulder. She had been given the guest house on the estate, fully protected by the Moretti family.
I felt a warm hand on the small of my back.
I turned. Luca stood there, wearing a casual white shirt, looking more relaxed than I had ever seen him.
"It’s quiet," Luca smiled softly.
"It’s perfect," I replied.
He took my hand and led me away from the patio, down a cobblestone path toward the rose garden.
"Emily," Luca started, his voice thick with emotion. "You walked into this house as a maid, but you fought like a queen. You gave me back my brother’s memory. You saved my nephew. You saved me from a life built on lies."
He stopped and turned to face me. He reached into his pocket.
"I promised you that you would never be a maid again," he said.
He didn't pull out a flashy diamond ring. He pulled out a simple, elegant silver band with a small, flawless sapphire.
"This was my mother’s ring," Luca said quietly. "It belongs to the woman who holds the heart of this family. I want that to be you."
Tears of absolute joy spilled down my face. "Luca..."
"Stay by my side, Emily. Rule this family with me. Marry me."
"Yes," I cried, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, I will."
He slid the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly. He pulled me close, kissing me deeply. The fear, the pain, the running—it was all gone. We had won our dignity, our safety, and our family.
As we pulled apart, smiling, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out, expecting a message from the hospital.
But it was an email. From an anonymous sender.
Attached was an audio file. I clicked play.
It was a recording of a man’s voice.
"The Moretti boss is distracted by his new fiancée. Execute Phase Two."
I froze. I knew that voice.
May you like
It was the Mayor of Chicago.
