Chapter 12 - Coming Home

The revelation shattered the last wall between us.
I ran downstairs and found Luca sitting by the fireplace, his head in his hands.
“Luca,” I breathed.
He looked up, his eyes red. “I thought we were cursed, Hannah. I thought my family only brought destruction.”
I knelt in front of him and showed him the photograph. “Your father didn't hurt him. He was just trying to keep the peace. He spent the rest of his life trying to make it right.”
Luca stared at the photo, the heavy weight of the past finally lifting from his shoulders.
He pulled me into a desperate, crushing hug, burying his face in my hair.
“I love you,” he whispered. “I will spend the rest of my life making sure you and Leo never hurt again.”
“I know,” I smiled through my tears.
Christmas morning was chaotic, loud, and perfect.
Leo tore through wrapping paper, screaming in joy at a new train set.
Teresa sat in her armchair, sipping coffee and laughing at the mess.
And Duke?
Duke lay beside the fire, wearing a ridiculous red Christmas bow around his collar.
Luca sat on the rug, helping Leo assemble the train tracks, while I leaned against the sofa, watching my family.
Suddenly, a loud knock echoed from the front door.
We all froze. The ghosts of the past still haunted the edges of our minds.
Luca stood up, his face serious. He walked to the door and pulled it open.
A delivery driver stood there, holding a massive, wrapped package.
“Special delivery for a Mr. Duke?” the driver said with a smile.
Luca laughed out loud. He brought the box inside and set it on the floor.
Leo helped rip the paper off.
It was the most expensive, heated, memory-foam orthopedic dog bed on the market, embroidered with gold thread.
A tag was attached. It read: For the best boy. From your Dad.
Luca looked at his mother. Teresa smiled, tears shining in her eyes.
“I ordered it a month ago,” she whispered.
Duke sniffed the new bed. He stepped onto it, did three slow circles, and laid down with a heavy, contented sigh.
He rested his white chin on his paws and looked at the fireplace.
But he wasn't waiting anymore.

He closed his eyes, surrounded by the noise, the warmth, and the love of his family.
He was finally home.
