Chapter 10 - The Family New Beginnings DesignedClara sat between two bassinets.

Noah slept on her left.

Lucas slept on her right beneath oxygen monitoring after treatment for a respiratory infection.

Daniel stood at the window, reading the laboratory reports again even though the words would not change.

Noah was his biological son.

Lucas was Clara’s biological son.

Neither child belonged genetically to both of them.

Yet both had been placed into their lives by a network that believed genetics, identity, and love could be arranged for profit.

Clara looked at Daniel.

“Do you regret holding Noah first?”

“No.”

“Do you regret bringing Lucas back?”

“Never.”

“Then look at me.”

He did.

“They are our sons.”

The statement did not erase the unknown biological parents. It did not solve legal questions. It did not undo the violation committed against Clara’s body or Daniel’s stored genetic material.

But it established where they stood.

Together.

Rachel entered with Detective Lane and a reproductive-fraud investigator named Dr. Maya Collins.

Meadow House records revealed that Clara’s prenatal care had been manipulated from the beginning. During what she believed was a routine fertility procedure months before conception, someone implanted an embryo created from her genetic material and a sealed donor.

Daniel’s sample had been used in another pregnancy carried by a New Beginnings participant.

The network timed both births at the same hospital.

Noah’s biological mother had used the name Laura Miles.

Her real identity remained unknown.

Lucas’s biological father appeared only as donor code RC-01.

Daniel looked toward Robert’s records.

“Robert Carter?”

Dr. Collins shook her head.

“His confirmed sample does not match.”

“Then who is RC?”

The code appeared in older New Beginnings files attached to the Carter trust.

A primary genetic source.

Used repeatedly over thirty years.

Robert had built an entire hereditary line around one unidentified man.

Several adults associated with the trust might be biological half-siblings.

Possibly Daniel.

Possibly Lucas.

Possibly the original Daniel Carter now called David Cole.

The trust was not preserving a family.

It was reproducing one donor’s lineage through different households.

“Why?” Clara asked.

Dr. Collins had found only fragments.

New Beginnings believed the donor carried rare genetic traits linked to intelligence, physical health, and stress resilience. The organization marketed children from the line to wealthy families under disguised medical programs.

Robert was not the founder.

He was a manager.

Evelyn was not the first mother manipulated.

She was one of many women converted into recruiters after losing children.

Pierce served as medical and legal facilitator.

The true source remained hidden.

Detective Lane reported that Robert had requested counsel and refused further questions. Evelyn had begun cooperating but claimed she never knew RC-01’s identity.

Edmund Pierce had disappeared.

His office was empty.

New Beginnings servers had been remotely wiped minutes before Meadow House was breached.

Someone more powerful had expected the rescue.

Daniel asked about custody.

Rachel answered.

“No emergency order currently separates either baby from you. But birth certificates, genetic parentage, and adoption status must be reviewed.”

Clara’s face tightened.

“They can still take them?”

“Not without due process. We are filing immediate petitions recognizing your established parent-child relationships and the fraud committed against you.”

“Established? They’re days old.”

“You carried Lucas. Daniel’s paternity of Noah is established. Both of you accepted and cared for both infants without knowledge of the exchange. The law has routes, but this is unprecedented.”

Unprecedented meant no promises.

Clara looked toward the door every time footsteps approached.

The fear of separation now lived inside her body.

Daniel moved closer.

“No one signs anything without Rachel.”

“No one gives them medication without us checking.”

“No one enters the house without permission.”

Clara nodded.

Their home remained a crime scene.

For the moment, they would stay in a protected family suite near the hospital.

Mrs. Alvarez brought clothes and stood crying when she saw both babies.

She held Lucas first, then Noah.

“No child should start life as paperwork,” she whispered.

That evening, Evelyn requested a recorded call.

Clara refused to join.

Daniel accepted from another room.

His mother appeared without pearls or makeup. She wore a detention uniform and looked much older.

“Are both babies alive?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Clara?”

“Recovering.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I told myself I was saving Noah from what happened to my first child.”

“Who was your first child?”

“I don’t know what name they gave her.”

A daughter.

Taken when Evelyn was sixteen.

Robert later told her the baby died, but no record confirmed it.

“I joined New Beginnings because he promised I could find her,” Evelyn said.

“Did you?”

“Once.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“She visited our house when you were a baby.”

“Who?”

“A young nurse. Robert called her Rebecca.”

Evelyn believed the woman might be her daughter but was forbidden to ask. Years later, Rebecca disappeared after accessing Carter trust files.

The code beside her name was RC-02.

Daniel wrote it down.

“Who is RC-01?”

Evelyn looked toward someone outside the camera frame.

“I cannot say here.”

“Why?”

“Pierce is not missing.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“What does that mean?”

“He is using another name.”

“Which name?”

Evelyn’s image froze.

The detention call disconnected.

A security alert sounded in the hospital corridor.

Daniel opened the door.

Staff were running toward the neonatal family wing.

Clara stood beside the bassinets, holding Noah while Lucas remained asleep.

“What happened?”

A nurse checked the monitors.

“Someone attempted to access both babies’ records from inside the hospital.”

Dr. Collins traced the account.

The login belonged to the hospital’s newly appointed chief medical officer.

Dr. Richard Cole.

The initials matched RC.

Daniel searched the name.

A professional photograph appeared.

The man was in his late sixties, silver-haired, respected, and nationally known for maternal-health reform.

Clara stared at the screen.

“He was in my delivery room.”

Daniel remembered him briefly entering during the emergency, giving instructions while nurses moved the babies.

Richard Cole had been present during the exchange.

Dr. Collins opened a sealed New Beginnings file recovered from an offline backup.

RC-01: Richard Cole. Primary Line Founder.

Before anyone could react, the lights above the family suite dimmed.

The electronic locks clicked.

A calm male voice came through the room’s intercom.

“Daniel, Clara, please remain where you are.”

Richard Cole appeared behind the glass door wearing a white medical coat.

Two hospital security officers stood with him.

He looked toward the two bassinets with quiet satisfaction.

“After thirty years,” he said, “the brothers are finally together.”

Daniel moved in front of Clara and both babies.

Richard raised a sealed genetic report.

“You believe Noah and Lucas were created for the Carter trust.”

His smile remained gentle.

“They were created to find the child Evelyn lost.”

Clara held Noah tighter.

“What child?”

Richard looked directly at Daniel.

“You.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

The doctor continued.

“Robert and Evelyn were never your adoptive parents. They stole you from my original study.”

He touched the glass.

“And now that both newborn markers have activated, I finally know which family hid your twin sister.”

Behind him, a woman in a nurse’s uniform stepped forward.

She had Evelyn’s eyes.

In her arms was a third newborn.
