Part 9: The First Apology

Connor turned to me.

The words nearly choked him.

“I’m sorry.”

I nodded.

I did not forgive him in that moment.

Forgiveness is not a vending machine.

You don’t insert two words and receive absolution.

But I accepted the start.

“Thank you,” I said.

Connor looked back at his mother.

“Can I come in?”

Margaret’s face softened, but her spine stayed straight.

“Not today.”

His face fell.

“You said—”

“I said you could apologize. Trust will take longer.”

He stood on the porch, stunned by a boundary he could not buy, bully, or inherit.

Margaret closed the storm door gently.

He walked away without another word.
