Chapter 4 - THE MAN ELENA HAD BEEN TRYING TO STOP

Caleb disappeared before noon.

Adrian had expected it.

What Caleb did not know was that Elena had already copied everything.

Every payment.

Every transaction.

Every message.

She had placed one encrypted copy with Grant and another inside a safety deposit box under her mother’s maiden name.

Caleb could run.

He could not erase her.

Adrian spent the next forty-eight hours dismantling everything his oldest friend had built.

Accounts were frozen.

Partners abandoned Caleb when shown copies of his theft.

Drivers refused his calls.

Managers changed access codes.

By Friday evening, Caleb had nowhere left to go.

Adrian found him at an abandoned distribution warehouse along the river.

Rain hammered the metal roof.

Caleb stood beside an old desk, a pistol lying within reach.

“You came alone,” Caleb said.

“Yes.”

“Stupid.”

“Probably.”

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“You always were arrogant.”

“Why Elena?”

Caleb’s smile vanished.

“She wouldn’t stop.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“She was destroying twenty years of work.”

“She was stopping you from stealing.”

“I earned that money.”

“You stole it.”

“I built this company beside you!”

“And because of that you decided to kill my wife?”

Caleb slammed his fist against the desk.

“She was changing you!”

Adrian stared at him.

“No. She was trying to.”

“You stopped listening to me after she started digging around.”

“I stopped listening to everyone.”

“That little ice queen thought she understood our world.”

Adrian moved forward.

“Don’t call her that.”

Caleb laughed.

“There he is. The devoted husband. A little late, don’t you think?”

Adrian froze.

Caleb saw it.

Enjoyed it.

“You were sleeping with that blonde while Elena was crawling through financial records trying to save your miserable life.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You know the funniest part?” Caleb continued. “She defended you.”

“What?”

“When I confronted her.”

Adrian stopped moving.

“You spoke to her?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Caleb leaned against the desk.

“I told her you didn’t deserve what she was doing.”

“What did she say?”

Caleb smiled.

“She said that wasn’t the point.”

Adrian’s breathing slowed.

“She said, ‘A person doesn’t have to deserve being saved before you decide not to let them die.’”

The warehouse seemed suddenly silent despite the rain.

Adrian pictured Elena saying it.

Calmly.

Without theatrics.

Without asking anything in return.

Caleb reached for the pistol.

Adrian drew his own faster.

The gunshot echoed through the warehouse.

Caleb’s weapon fell from his hand.

Blood spread across his palm where the bullet had grazed it.

Adrian stepped forward and aimed at his chest.

Caleb stared at him.

“Do it.”

Adrian’s finger tightened.

“Do it!”

He wanted to.

God help him, he wanted to.

Thomas was dead.

Elena had nearly died twice.

Seven years of marriage had almost ended on a hospital gurney because the man standing before him wanted money and power.

Adrian imagined pulling the trigger.

The recoil.

The silence afterward.

He imagined returning to Elena’s bedside and telling himself it had been for her.

Then another memory came.

Her letter.

Both decisions will finally be mine.

Elena had spent months fighting to regain control of her life.

If Adrian killed Caleb in her name, he would be doing what he had always done.

Turning her choices into his.

Adrian slowly lowered the gun.

Caleb blinked.

“What are you doing?”

“Something Elena spent seven years trying to teach me.”

“What?”

“Stopping.”

Adrian kicked Caleb’s pistol across the floor.

“You wanted my empire?”

Caleb sneered.

“Yes.”

“You can have what’s left of it.”

Confusion entered Caleb’s face.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Every record Elena collected has been released to the attorneys, auditors and investigators handling the companies. Every account you touched is exposed.”

Caleb went pale.

“You wouldn’t.”

“I already did.”

“You’ll destroy yourself.”

“Probably.”

“You’ll lose everything.”

Adrian thought of Elena lying beneath white hospital sheets.

“No,” he said quietly.

“I almost lost everything Tuesday.”

He walked away.

May you like

Behind him, Caleb shouted his name.

Adrian never turned.
