Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT ADRIAN WALKED AWAY

Z
The largest crisis came six weeks into their reconciliation.
Vale Freight had spent months negotiating a six-hundred-million-dollar port contract.
It was the kind of deal Adrian once would have sacrificed almost anything to secure.
The final presentation was scheduled for Friday.
Claire’s community housing gala was scheduled the same night.
He had promised to attend.
On Wednesday, the port authority moved Adrian’s presentation from the afternoon to seven p.m.
His executive team expected him to call Claire and cancel.
Old Adrian would have.
Instead he asked the authority for another time.
They refused.
His CFO stared across the conference table.
“You’re not serious.”
“I am.”
“This contract affects eight thousand employees.”
“I know.”
“And you’re considering missing final presentation because of a fundraiser?”
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“Choose your next sentence carefully.”
The CFO stopped.
Adrian looked around the table.
“Who built the presentation?”
“We all did.”
“Who can deliver it?”
Silence.
Then Monica, his longtime assistant, spoke.
“Daniel Kim.”
Daniel was the forty-year-old head of logistics strategy.
Brilliant.
Usually ignored when Adrian occupied the room.
Adrian nodded.
“Daniel presents.”
The CFO nearly choked.
“They expect the CEO.”
“Then they’ll discover Vale has more than one competent person.”
At seven Friday evening, Adrian entered the community gala.
Claire was standing near the stage.
She saw him.
Her expression changed from surprise to concern.
“You came.”
“I said I would.”
“What about the port?”
“Daniel is presenting.”
“Adrian.”
“He knows the numbers better than I do.”
“You could lose the contract.”
“Yes.”
Claire stared.
“I never asked you to do that.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
He adjusted his tie.
“Because the company should survive me keeping one promise to my wife.”
The word wife hung between them.
They were still legally married.
Yet neither had used it naturally in weeks.
Claire’s eyes softened.
“I would have understood.”
“I know.”
“That’s different from you choosing to be here.”
“Yes.”
The gala raised two million dollars.
Adrian donated fifty dollars.
Claire stared at the card.
“You’re joking.”
“You said no gifts over fifty.”
“That rule applies to me.”
“I’m respecting the spirit.”
She laughed.
An hour later, Monica called.
Adrian stepped into the hall.
Claire watched his face while he listened.
Then he smiled.
“What?”
Daniel’s voice was loud enough that Claire could faintly hear him through the phone.
Adrian hung up.
“We got the contract.”
Claire smiled.
“Without you?”
“Apparently I’m unnecessary.”
“Character growth.”
He laughed.
Then his expression became thoughtful.
“What?”
“I spent fifteen years building a company that couldn’t breathe unless I was in every room.”
“And tonight?”
“It breathed.”
Claire took his hand.
“Maybe you did build something extraordinary.”
He looked at her.
“Maybe.”
The moment might have become romantic.
Instead Claire suddenly went pale.
Adrian caught her elbow.
“What?”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not.”
“I stood too quickly.”
“Claire.”
She pulled away.
“I said I’m fine.”
Ten minutes later, she nearly fainted near the elevator.
Adrian took her to the hospital.
Not because he ordered her.
Because she agreed.
Blood work.
Questions.
Waiting.
Claire sat on the hospital bed staring at the wall.
The doctor returned smiling.
“Well, I found the reason for the dizziness.”
Claire looked up.
“So?”
“You’re pregnant.”
Silence.
Adrian did not breathe.
Claire blinked.
“That’s impossible.”
The doctor smiled.
“Not generally.”
Claire stared.
Then covered her mouth.
Adrian stood beside the window.
Completely frozen.
The doctor glanced between them.
“I’ll give you a moment.”
The door closed.
Claire slowly looked at Adrian.
He seemed terrified.
“You’re not saying anything.”
“I’m trying not to say the wrong thing.”
A laugh broke through her shock.
“That may be new.”
“Yes.”
He came closer.
“Are you okay?”
“I don’t know.”
“Are you happy?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s allowed.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“We weren’t trying.”
“I know.”
“We don’t even know if we’re staying married.”
“I know.”
“You always wanted children.”
“So did you.”
She started crying.
Adrian’s face tightened.
He wanted to touch her.
She saw it.
This time she reached first.
He took her hands.
“What do you want?” he asked.
Claire looked at him through tears.
There it was again.
Choice.
Her choice.
Not his legacy.
Not the Vale name.
Not what society expected.
“What do you want?” she asked back.
Adrian swallowed.
“I want you.”
Her breath stopped.
“And if this baby comes with you, I want the baby.”
He squeezed her hands.
“But I’m not going to use our child to keep you married to me.”
Claire began crying harder.
Adrian pulled her into his arms only after she moved toward him.
For years, she had dreamed of this moment differently.
A beautiful nursery.
A perfect announcement.
A husband she trusted without question.
Instead she had a hospital room, a half-signed divorce, and a man rebuilding himself one decision at a time.
It was messy.
Uncertain.
Real.
Claire pressed her face into his chest.
“I’m scared.”
“So am I.”
“You’re Adrian Vale. You don’t get scared.”
His arms tightened around her.
May you like
“I’ve been terrified since the night you picked up that suitcase.”
And somehow, that was exactly the answer she needed.
