Chapter 5

“Because I’m the one who told you about them.”

Arthur let out a breath of relief, foolishly assuming I was still on his side.

I leaned back in my chair. “Sign the papers, Arthur.”

I slid the indemnity agreement across the table. “In this document, you acknowledge that you obtained the loan under false pretenses. I will pay off the bank directly to clear my father’s deeds, but you will owe every cent of that debt to me personally.”

Then I slid the divorce papers over. “And here, we end our marriage.”

“Are you insane?!” Olivia shrieked. “Arthur is about to make you both rich!”

Arthur looked at the terms. Because we had a prenuptial agreement, my house, my accounts, and my assets remained entirely mine. And per the property purchase, the five newly acquired lots belonged exclusively to Arthur.

I watched his mind race. He still truly believed those lots were about to be worth millions. He thought I was making the biggest mistake of my life.

“If you want a divorce over a temper tantrum, fine,” Arthur sneered, grabbing a pen. “But don’t come crawling back to me when I’m a millionaire.”

“I won’t.”

He signed his name with a smug flourish. He even smiled as he handed the pen back.

An hour later, Arthur packed his bags and left my house, taking Olivia and Chloe with him. Since Olivia had sold her townhouse, they rented a tiny, cramped two-bedroom apartment while they waited for their fortune to arrive.

As Chloe walked out the door, she smirked at me. “Take a good look at us, Genevieve. The next time you see us, we’ll be driving a car that costs more than this house.”

I didn’t answer. I just shut the door.

That afternoon, my lawyer and I paid off the bank. A few days later, my father had his clean deeds back in his hands. When I gave them to him, he held them against his chest and wept quietly.

“I thought I lost everything your mother and I worked for,” he whispered.

“Never, Dad,” I said, hugging him tight.
