Chapter 13 - THE PROMISE UNDER THE APPLE TREE

Later that afternoon, Morgan stood beneath the largest apple tree in the orchard.

A small wooden podium had been placed beside the trunk.

Guests gathered on folding chairs.

Eleanor sat in the front row.

Daniel stood nearby, holding a basket of programs.

Morgan looked out at the faces before her.

Some belonged to old friends.

Others belonged to people she'd met through Rebecca's Porch.

A few were strangers who had simply come to support the program.

She took a breath.

"Two years ago," she began, "I thought my life was falling apart."

The crowd grew quiet.

"I had spent a long time believing that if I worked hard enough, gave enough, and stayed patient enough, everything would eventually be okay."

She paused.

"But sometimes, when you're constantly trying to keep someone else happy, you stop noticing how unhappy you've become."

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

Morgan continued.

"I was fortunate. Someone recognized that I might be in trouble and warned me. Other people helped me understand what was happening and find professional support."

She touched the apple blossom pendant.

"But not everyone gets that kind of warning."

A woman in the second row nodded slowly.

"That's why we started Rebecca's Porch. Not to tell people how to live, and not to judge them for the choices they've made."

Morgan looked around.

"But to remind them that they deserve accurate information, respectful treatment, and the freedom to make decisions about their own lives."

Her voice trembled.

"I used to think strength meant never needing help."

She glanced at Eleanor.

"Now I know that sometimes strength means opening the door when someone knocks."

A few people wiped their eyes.

Morgan smiled.

"And sometimes it means being the person who knocks."

Applause rose through the orchard.

Morgan stepped away from the podium.

Eleanor stood slowly.

Morgan walked directly toward her.

The two women embraced.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Eleanor whispered, "You gave me my daughter back in a way I never expected."

Morgan held her tighter.

"And you gave me my future."

Nearby, Daniel quietly placed the programs on a table.

He didn't interrupt.

He understood that some moments belonged entirely to the people who had lived them.

When Morgan finally stepped back, Eleanor touched the silver pendant.

"Looks beautiful on you."

Morgan smiled.

May you like

"It feels right."

And it did.
