Chapter 3 - The Swan’s Memory

For three years, the murderer of my brother had slept in my guest suites and dined at my table.

I walked over to where Vanessa sat huddled against the altar steps. The eighty-thousand-dollar lace dress was torn, her tiara knocked askew, but her eyes burned with the venom of a cornered rattlesnake. She looked up at my gun, letting out a sharp, hysterical laugh.

“Shoot me, Damien!” she sneered. “Put a bullet in my head! But the moment my heartbeat monitor stops, the automated relay sends the detonation code to the bunker in Lemont! In twenty minutes, your brother’s precious brat will be blown into ten thousand pieces!”

“You won’t die today, Vanessa,” I said, my voice dead and emotionless. “A bullet is an honor. You will spend the next forty years in a concrete box at ADX Florence, wearing orange cotton and eating off a plastic tray.”

I turned to Dominic. “Put titanium cuffs on her. Lock her in the wine vault beneath the ballroom. Cut all cell signals. If she tries to swallow her tongue, break her jaw.”

Dominic’s men dragged Vanessa away, her curses echoing down the marble corridors until the vault door slammed shut with a final, heavy thud.

I stood alone on the altar steps with Emma. The grand ballroom, once filled with flowers and diamonds, felt like a sacred crypt. I looked at the silver swan necklace resting against her collarbone—the talisman I had given her twenty years ago in the ashes of our burning manor. She had kept it for two decades. She had worn it through three years of silent servitude while protecting the memory of the brother I couldn’t save.

I dropped to one knee before her, taking her small, calloused hands in mine. The hands that had scrubbed my floors and polished my silver were trembling, but her hazel eyes held an ocean of strength.

“You carried my brother’s legacy in your arms,” I whispered, my voice rough with an unbearable mixture of reverence and remorse. “You endured three years of silence in my own home while I was blind. Emma… forgive me.”

Emma shook her head, tears spilling freely over her cheeks as she squeezed my fingers. “There is nothing to forgive, Damien. You saved my life when I was a little girl. Gabriel loved you more than anyone on this earth. He always said: *‘Damien is the iron wall that keeps the monsters out.’* Now we have to save his son.”

She unzipped the lining of her gray maid’s jacket, pulling out a battered leather-bound notebook covered in Gabriel’s dense, microscopic handwriting. “Gabriel knew the Sterling family’s private holding companies. He mapped their decommissioned industrial sites along the Illinois and Michigan Canal. He wrote down the GPS coordinates for Senator Sterling’s subterranean black site.”

I took the notebook. My cyber specialist, Nathan, bypassed the cipher within fifteen seconds. The coordinates burned green against the tactical map on my tablet:

SITE IDENTIFIER: STERLING QUARRY RESERVE — LEMONT, ILLINOIS. DETONATION TIMER: 38 MINUTES REMAINING.

I racked the slide of my Kimber, looking toward the heavy bronze exit doors. “Dominic! Four armored Suburbans and twenty men with full tactical gear. Tonight, we bring my brother’s boy home.”
